Bringing the design up to date. Making fundamental changes. Adopting CAD to allow customization prior to build. Addition of extensive additional facilities and features. These included generators, wide screen TVs, comfortable beds, Air conditioning and heating. Use of aircraft materials to reduce weight. These could be fitted while remaining within the weight restrictions. Just prior to starting, the business suffered a catastrophic fire. My Advice was listened to but the nature of the damage was such the very fabric of the company was threatened.
  • Alstom Transport
    Mechanical Engineer
    Alstom Transport Feb 2009 - Sep 2009
    Manchester Traincare Centre, Longsight Manchester
Contract post with Rullion. Originally contracted to strip and partly rebuild the bogies of the Pendilino train at its 1,000,000 mile service. As it became increasingly obvious the contractual throughput was not possible without a complete rearrangement of the workshop to allow a doubling of bogey numbers. A major difficulty being the building had to be protected as it was a listed. The workforce had become acclimatised to the throughput as it was and were loathe to change. My main duty became to devise a method, offer it for management approval and incorporate it..Then to encourage a more flexible approach by the workforce to the challenge. In this I was successful.

I was recruited to add to the numbers rebuilding the engines and reduce the downtime in theatre. These complex engines are two stroke, with two crankshafts and twelve pistons running in six liners. This means the explosion occurs in the centre of the engine between the pistons. I quickly developed my skills to assemble the engines in the same time as the resident engineers.
