About Rod Koon
Experienced communications and marketing professional with a demonstrated history of doing strategic goal-oriented work in the maritime industry. Strong media and communication professional skilled in strategic communications projects including: publications, video, community relations, special events, web and social media, internal communications and employee engagement. Led the Port of Tacoma's award-winning centennial celebration program in 2018.A few updates: HISTORICAL WRITING: During 2022, I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours researching and writing a history book about the Port of Tacoma for Arcadia Publishing. It was published July 17, 2023 and is available for sale online and at some local stores in the Tacoma area. I'm now on the "civic club speakers' circuit"--Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.--giving presentations about the Port's history. And speaking of history, I also did extensive research and writing to support the United Way of Pierce County (UWPC) centennial celebration that was held in May 2023. I also helped develop a series of large historical photo/timeline panels for this project that are now displayed at UWPC's office in downtown Tacoma.In September 2024, I started research on a book about the history of the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club. My project plan is to get it written and published by Spring 2025. MUSIC: I've been playing guitar since grade school (thanks, Beatles!) and enjoy the many ways that music can help people truly "connect" with one another. Starting in 2022, I have been enjoying spending more time on my music--writing songs, playing guitar and performing. This included entering an original song in this year's NPR Tiny Desk Contest. During the summer of 2023, I kept busy doing about 10 gigs with various bandmates at public and private events. I have had a few great gigs already in 2024, and have about 10 more planned (so far) for the rest of the year--with my full band: THE POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, and my folkier/smaller group: ROD KOON & FRIENDS.TENNIS: On the fitness side, I've been playing this sport for more than 60 years. Played on high school and college teams and taught tennis professionally for many years. Still a great sport to play today!

CurrentStaying Connected with COVIDHere are some ways we're working to do that:1. All Hands Meetings: Instead of holding four such events in 2020, we did eight. In 2021 we're planning on six. Our attendance is up about 50% from our in-person meetings we've held in the past. 2. Connecting through photo sharing: We've also asked employees to send in photos of various topics--their remote work spaces, their pet(s) and even Pandemic Pastimes. We share these on our intranet site and in other ways as well. 3. Strategic Plan online Open House: Last July, we launched a virtual open house to enable citizens to get informed and give feedback on our year-long Strategic Plan work. A total of 450 people gave us feedback during the seven months we had the site up. 2018: Our Centennial YearOur centennial celebration included a wide range of community relations and marketing efforts to highlight this milestone. Our efforts earned a top communications award from the American Association of Port Authorities. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUNDI started as the Port's first Communications Manager in 1983. Like the Port, my job duties have changed and evolved over the years. Currently, my main focus is on internal employee communications, and have worked keep employees better informed and proud of the place they work...and I also try to have some fun. I also conduct an annual internal communications survey to track how we're doing and make improvements so we can do better.One of my "greatest hits" was when I had the lead in writing, producing and narrating a marketing video in a three-day time frame that helped convince a major shipping line to move to the Port of Tacoma. Major areas of experience include: Writing, graphic design, photography, speech writing, PowerPoint, SharePoint, publication design/production, script writing and special event production. In 2021, I'm mastering Sway--for digital newsletters, etc.A favorite quote: "Ancora Imparo"--Michelangelo ("I am Still Learning").
