Rodney founded Arctic Data Services, LLC (ADS) in 2014 and serves as owner, manager, and principal chemist. ADS provides a broad range of environmental consulting services, from spill response to site characterization and cleanup, with specialization in management and quality assurance/quality control review of environmental data. In ADS’s 6+ years of operation, Rodney has reviewed hundreds of laboratory reports, developed numerous quality assurance project plan (QAPP), prepared dozens of data quality assessment (DQA) and chemical data quality review (CDQR) reports for a variety of clients and projects. In addition to data services, Rodney has managed numerous Fairbanks-area site assessment, investigation, and cleanup projects. ADS routinely provides Fairbanks-based field support to Anchorage-based companies conducting work in the Interior.Experience Highlights:- Reviewed and validated data for over 500 laboratory reports.- Prepared over 50 data quality assessments or quality assurance reports.- Prepared dozens of chemical data quality reviews for DoD projects.- Prepared numerous work plans, field sampling plans, and quality assurance project plans for a variety of projects.- Extensive experience reviewing emerging contaminant data, including per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) data in various media (water, soil, plant & animal tissue)- Designed and developed ChemData™, an in-house cloud-based SQL database for managing environmental data, which has been used on a majority of ADS projects.- Experienced in field sampling, project management, and rural logistics.

Rodney served as research technician and primary chemist at the research lab of Dr. Mary Beth Leigh. Rodney helped plan, coordinate, and execute the first large-scale pilot study of phytoremediation in Alaska. In addition to field management duties, Rodney performed GC/MS method development, managed sample analysis (over 300 soil samples for DRO and PAH analysis per event), and assisted with community education and engagement.

As senior chemist and project manager for S&W, Rodney’s duties consisted of managing various environmental projects, including managing budgets; leading and training field personnel; coordinating schedules; and writing proposals, work plans, and reports. He gained extensive experience working on environmental projects in rural Alaskan villages, and excellent working relationships with ADEC project managers in the contaminated sites, prevention and emergency response, water quality, solid waste, and drinking water programs. He has a good working knowledge of state environmental regulations and guidance, as well as from various federal agencies. He has experience collecting and reviewing data for a wide variety of contaminants, media, and sampling techniques. He quickly became Shannon & Wilson’s local expert on vapor intrusion assessments, and coordinated work on multiple sites with chlorinated-solvent plumes and corresponding vapor-intrusion concerns. He served as lead data manager on a multi-million dollar project to characterize a miles-long emerging contaminant plume in North Pole, Alaska. Other tasks included serving as the Fairbanks-office director for the company’s sustainability program, as well as its information technology department.

As a laboratory technician for the USDA ARS, Rodney conducted a variety of chemical and biological analyses on fish byproduct from the Alaska fishing industry. The goal of research conducted in the department was to find alternative, sustainable uses for fish byproducts that are currently wasted.
