As a Registered Nurse for over 20 years, I am a nurse educator and director of the Healthcare Career Training Institute , which is scheduled to open in Indianapolis, Indiana and in my hometown of Gary, Indiana, later in 2017. It is my way of giving to that community. The Institute incorporates customer service skills into a health care curriculum, so that students who become certified nursing assistants, EKG technicians, phlebotomists, and Patient Care Technicians, can hold ancillary positions that support hospitals and health care facilities, along with being readily employable and having valuable people skills. My journey to becoming an RN with a master’s in business administration is one-of-a-kind. I obtained my associate’s degree in architectural engineering from ITT Technical Institute. Upon graduation, I sold appliances at Montgomery Wards, where I learned to distill things down to their simplest form and communicate them back to customers in ways they could understand. I do the same with patients today.I went on to receive my associate’s degree in nursing from Indiana University School of Nursing, my bachelors of science and master’s in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University, and various accreditations and certifications, including Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.My formula for success incorporates a natural curiosity, a passion for serving others, and my right-left brain balance with my personal philosophy, “If everyone is giving, everyone is receiving.”I am the fifth of six children. My father grew up in Mississippi, worked in the Steel Mills, and had a 7th grade education. He emphasized education over physical labor. My mother is a Register Nurse; I became one, inspired my sister to pursue nursing, and now my son is a nurse. That is three generations of nurses!
