Engine & Components Support Engineer
Under the Trainee Program I optimized the information flow in the components/engines business. I started to work with several people, from directors to technicians, in order to define and characterize the actual information flow of the components/engines maintenance business leading myself to learn day-by-day more about the business structure (internal standards to support maintenance processes, documentation, etc.) as well as understanding the actual problem and contributing with my full dedication to extract solutions and improve company’s results. I divided the solutions in process and system. In process improvements were introduced new procedures changing actual processes and creation of checklists, templates and standards to ensure an easier connection between areas and better control and management of CMM’s updates, traceability of LLP’s, SB’s and AD’s management, rejected material and anomalies, with benefit to the quality, on time deliveries and cost indicators. I designed a system, in Microsoft Access, with special focus on the landing gears shop needs, creating databases and interfaces for inspection and evaluation phase, LLP’s and SB’s. In parallel I studied how ORACLE’s complex Maintenance Repair and Overhaul application could meet the needs for components maintenance since it is already in use in the Engine’s shop, which was my benchmark. I chose a landing gear sub-assembly and inserted it on the ORCALE cMRO, to show to the company how this application together with the developments already implemented to the engines by the IT and together with the Engineering team could meet the landing gears needs, presenting a practical example with this sub-assembly of the landing gear, quantifying the necessary resources for reproducing all this work to all landing gear shipsets which OGMA is capacitated do overhaul and repair.

Composites Engineer
Work conducted in the scope of a project that aimed the development, production and experimental characterization of a new sandwich structured composite material based in natural materials including stone and cork. I incorporated natural fibers and bio-based resins which made it possible, for the first time, to study the technical, environmental and financial viability of this new solution. The experimental characterization focused on a mechanical behavior analysis occurred from bending tests through which were determined parameters such as maximum stress and apparent stiffness as well as the maximum deflection. In the case of asymmetrical sandwiches structures it was not possible to fully apply the existing standards for composite materials. The tests followed a testing methodology developed during the dissertation and used either conventional mechanical testing systems or a new measuring displacements and strains system based on the method of digital image correlation. A comparison of various outcomes resulting from both methods was carried out and calculated a tendency for the deviation occurred between the resulting stiffness using each of these systems. The environmental impact was measured using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) technique and the costs implied in each studied typology, in material terms, all being presented for a short comparison. The three parameters culminate in a multicriteria analysis, which, after the allocation of importance and relative weights, distributed in four different ways (cases), leads to a global decision making indicator. The final conclusion was that the natural fibers, for structural applications, being technical inferior to the synthetic ones, will hardly replace them, even though this replacement is possible if the project requirements are met, even though presently they show an inferior performance in terms of cost and ecological footprint.
