Led Instagram's engineering efforts on Interests, which included:- Creators/Media/IGTV- Discovery (Search and Explore)- Ads/Monetization- ShoppingSupported hundreds of engineers across Menlo Park, San Francisco, New York, and Japan.

Facebook Search: Leading initiatives on content search and customized experiences including Photos, Videos, Posts, News, Sports Marketplace, Workplace. Teams owned the full-stack experience from ranking/ML to frontend development. We also did highly specialized work on ranking, relevance, integrity, video understanding, computer vision, which supported multiple search verticals.

Luxe was an on-demand valet parking and car services app. I joined the company after their Series B round to help the team grow and scale. The company was eventually acquired by Volvo.

I led the teams responsible for all engagement experiences at Instagram: Feed, Search, Explore, and consumption of Stories. My teams introduced ranking, personalization, and numerous new features to all these surfaces, significantly improving the user experience across the app.

I started at Facebook as an engineer and moved into the management track after 4 years. I worked on a number of teams and products in different parts of the software stack.- Instagram Engagement (see Instagram position above)- Facebook Pages- Promoted Posts/Ads- Facebook Messages- Real-time Infrastructure- Data Infrastructure

Designed efficient fault-tolerant algorithms for database replication and group communication. I also implemented a database replication prototype and a simulation framework for wide-area information dissemination protocols. The result of this research work has been published in various conferences such as DSN, PODC, DISC, ICDCS, SRDS, and NCA.

I always believed in the power of messaging systems given the visceral need for people to communicate with one another. Before the mobile era, I thought there was a chance browsers would be the main platform for Internet access and had the idea of building a messaging plug-in that would help people interact with others accessing the same website. I got some seed funding and worked on it for a few months until I realized the flaws in that idea.

As part of my PhD, I worked as a teaching assistant for the following courses: Distributed Computing, Discrete Structures, and Algorithms and Data Structures. I also supervised some masters and final semester projects.

Extended the Smartfrog framework for system deployment to provide support for persistent components, which can survive crashes and resume their execution after problems have been overcome.

Worked as an Adjunct Professor at the Computer Engineering Department of the Catholic University of Campinas, teaching Operating Systems.
