Profile bio

About Roel Wuyts

I an Scientific Director at imec and lead the ExaScience Life Lab, a lab focused on providing software solutions for data-intensive high-performance computing problems, primarily in (but not limited to) the life sciences domain. I am also member of the EuroHPC JU RIAG (Research and Innovation Advisory Group), helping the European Commission set direction for future supercomputer initiatives. The lab has extensive experience with high performance computing technologies (distributed computing, parallel computing, concurrent computing, vectorization, NUMA optimizations), programming languages (Go, C++, Python, Lua, Rust, and many more), and usage of hardware accelerators (GPU, Xeon Phi, FPGA).We frequently help companies develop prototype solutions for complex problems involving multiple disciplines where we apply our experience to remove computational bottlenecks. We have successfully done this in the past for large-scale machine learning for pharmaceutical companies and imec projects, DNA sequencing software for hospitals and pharmaceutical companies, assay image feature extraction, advanced biostatistics and data analytics, and even multi-physics space weather simulations. We also have extensive experience with scalable privacy-preserving machine learning algorithms and implementations that are key to unlocking insights across data silos while keeping both data and models private for each data owner.I'm also part-time professor in the Distrinet group at the KULeuven. My academic achievements include published papers in IEEE Software or the Journal of Systems and Software, TOPLAS, ECOOP, OOPSLA or AOSD. I still have a special place in my heart for dynamic programming languages. I was the organizer of the first Dynamic Language Symposium (DLS), co-located with OOPSLA'05.In my spare time I play the drums (mostly rock and metal) and think about Life, the Universe and Everything.

Listed skills include Programming Languages, Computer Science, Algorithms, Oop, and 37 others.

May 2018 - Feb 2022

Principal Scientist

Leuven, Be

My main tasks lie in the ExaScience Life Project (a research project with Intel, Janssen Pharmaceutica, imec and all 5 Flemish universities) where I lead the workpackage on Data Intensive Parallel Programming Models.

Oct 2006 - Apr 2018

Professor

Ixelles, Bruxelles, Be

End responsible: obtaining funds, guiding PhD students, Teaching, participating in University Commissions

Oct 2003 - Sep 2006

Postdoc

Bern, Ch

During nearly three years I held a post-doc position at the Software Composition Group (SCG - headed by Prof.Dr. Oscar Nierstrasz). The first two years as postdoc at SCG I mainly worked on the PECOS project. We developed a component model for a particular kind of small embedded devices (called field devices). Special about this component model is that allows component compositions to be checked for timing, memory and scheduling requirements. Afterwards I mainly worked on the Traits model (composing groups of methods to form other traits or classes), the Classbox model (a module mechanism for object-oriented programming languages).

Jan 2001 - Oct 2003

Researcher

Brussel, Be

I did my Ph.D. at the Programming Technology Lab (PROG - headed by Prof.Dr. Theo D'Hondt) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, on a IWT grant. The topic of my Ph.D. research was to support the co-evolutionary changes between design and implementation (and synchronizing these changes). The basic mechanism to support the synchronization of changes was declarative meta-programming (see the Declarative Meta-Programming pages for more information). The validation of the research was done with Soul, a logic programming language implemented in the object-oriented language Smalltalk. Special about Soul is that it features reflection with Smalltalk.
