This new role involves the design, redevelopment and support of an existing product line along with the development of radio communications and the development of specialist test and measurement systems for product production. Although the product is based in the electro-mechanical domain my role is more focused on embedded software using the Microchip PIC product range and high performance analogue sensor integration.

Designing hardware and software solutions specific to company demands; testing and documenting existing system designs; production fault analysis and implementation of improvement strategies; PCB design using Altium and the drawing of system components for outsourcing using AutoCad.This position demanded analytical skills to determine and resolve production issues; develop system test procedures for outsourced software project elements requiring thorough and detailed documentation; product technical support for both sales and customers and the development of prototype control systems for future products using skills in electronic and software design and prototype construction and testing techniques.

The development of digital phase correction in their power analyser semiconductors. This knowledge transfer was requested by Microchip after they discovered that I was responsible for developing a series of three phase power meters (see 1993-2002) and asked for my considered opinion of their latest semiconductor dedicated to power measurement. I informed then that there was an opportunity to implement dynamic corrective phase shifting to improve the performance of their device. They implemented my design suggestions and patented the results.

Designing networked three phase power meters. This project required high speed, high integration, cost effective, multi-channel analogue to digital data processing incorporating Modbus communications and user interfaces. I designed and built specialised three phase test equipment to create harmonic content in order to test the embedded DSP to ensure correct analysis of harmonic content relative to calibrated measuring equipment. It was also necessary to develop automated test procedures for meter calibration certification.

Designing, programming and constructing 120 remote controlled Data Acquisition Systems for automatic weather stations where the interfacing of analogue, digital and bespoke communication protocols was required . I was solely responsible for the concept through to the supply of the product, including all aspects of design (both hardware and software), build, testing and EMC.
