About Roger Cano
Working in a relatively small company and having acquired knowledge of our own system during those years, I support many departments and work together with many people as a link between what the industry requirements are and our product development. We can say that I have many job roles at the same time. From giving advice to our development team to the very most lower level of SDR design and device troubleshooting, including customer engagement and direct technical support. We are in a very challenging sector that requires keeping up fast with the required knowledge and, in startup companies, there are no mentors to teach us how things works. Independence and fast self-learning is key.
Listed skills include Antennas, Telecommunications Engineering, Microsoft Office, Rams, and 36 others.

Technical Project Manager + Rf Systems Engineer
Current- Daily communication, support and updates to the software engineering team for all the issues and new customer requirements needed.- Full GS onboarding: Direct communication with both BD and technical teams, as a manager and as the actual technical integrator for GS onboarding projects to StellarStation.- Basic Python coding knowledge with gRPC API client integrations:Direct management and technical support on both Satellite and GS integrations into StellarStation as well as povision of example API integration code to customers, which many of them are directly using.- Zodiac GS equipment (MCS, CRT, HDR, Satcore) and Teledyne Qubeflex PoC:System automation, configuration for each satellite, remote test and operation.- GNURadio flowgraph design.- Satellite RF configuration troubleshooting with SDR:Many satellite operators use 3rd party transceivers not knowing the details of the RF signal they employ. I make use of SDR hardware together with GNURadio to perform extensive DSP analysis to figure out what’s missing. Many times we could solve GS equipment unable to demodulate due to misconfigurations or not supported compatibility (different 16APSK constellation mapping, Viterbi enabled without customer knowing, etc.)- Edge device troubleshooting through SSH and cloud logging.- Linux machines: daily usage.- Docker containers: basic experience on management and troubleshooting.- Main PoC for satellite RF physical layer matters (RF protocols, CCSDS framing, RS decoding check, etc.)- Main PoC for satellite orbits, TLE prediction understanding and suggesting improved solutions for satellite pass computation and scheduling.- Grafana experience, creating monitoring dashboards with real time graphs based on SQL and BigQuery. I also advice and support to the engineering team on improving data sources as well as understanding what system elements and parameters satellite customers need to see.-Designed and tested the feasibility of S-band low-cost GS.
Trainee - Vhf/Uhf Base Station Design And Operation; Cubesat Communications System Demonstrator
Trainee on ESA-ESAC (Madrid, Spain) developing a RF Base Station for VHF/UHF CubeSat operation based on Software Defined Radios (SDR), completing my Master Thesis.I designed, assembled and tested the whole transmission RF chain of a new SDR based amateur ground station intended for automated operation, with the use of open source software such as GNU Radio, Gpredict and Gqrx on Linux platform.By the end of my stay I performed a formal characterization of the ground station and redacted a detailed operations manual including test results, detailed troubleshooting and further improvements that should be done to the station, such as its upgrade to L-band and S-band.In parallel, I did design and assemble a custom designed PCB containing COTS RF devices as a CubeSat simulator used successfully as a link tester with the ground station.
Polyorbite – Rf Telecommunications Head Manager
Being the team manager of the student group Polyorbite, I designed and tested a full Telecommunications System for a 3U CubeSat under the CSDC (Canadian Satellite Design Challenge) 2014-2016 iteration at Polytechnique de Montréal University (Montreal, Canada) for my bachelor degree’s Final Thesis.During the one year stay I researched about suitable hardware, implementation and designed a custom PCB board and acquiring valuable experience on PCB designing. Also, a custom system of 3 deployable VHF/UHF antennas made of measurement tape for the CubeSat was designed, simulated and successfully tested by using Vector Network Analyzers.
