I was most recently CNN’s Vice President and Hong Kong bureau chief - one of the most prestigious media jobs in Asia. I led the team through some very turbulent times. When protestors and police clashed for several months on the streets, I provided editorial leadership, managed staff safety and gave support to those who struggled as they watched their city being torn apart. After a controversial national security law was introduced, I led CNN’s navigation through its complex content. Some staff were afraid of being arrested. I provided the reassurance they needed to continue their journalism thus protecting the CNN brand.Hong Kong’s Government ordered some of the toughest Covid restrictions in the world for almost 3 years. The challenges were immense. Staff recruitment and retention was a big problem and the mental health issues faced by the team was of great concern. As the bureau chief, people looked to me for leadership and support. My physical legacy in Hong Kong is building a new bureau from where CNN’s television and digital journalism in Asia is based. I also led projects to move CNN’s London and Abu Dhabi bureaus.In 2014, I played a leading role in building CNN Indonesia - an award winning television news network employing hundreds of staff. I was the CNN representative on site helping to ensure that all aspects of the new network was up to CNN’s standards. I taught many classes for new recruits. I spent 7 years working at CNN HQ as a Director of International Coverage. I deployed and managed teams in the field, oversaw safety and budgets, handled complex logistical situations - often with teams in disaster and war zones, liaised with program editors on content delivery and worked closely with CNN Legal and Standards and Practices departments. This high pressure role was right at the very heart of CNN’s international news operation. There were many sensitive and often dangerous situations where clear leadership and crisis management skills were essential. During this period, I managed many stories including the Haiti Earthquake and the Arab Spring. I also worked terror attacks in London and Mumbai and high profile royal events. In my Hong Kong bureau chief role, I had interactions with people in Government, the Police, politicians, diplomats and the business community. I am experienced and completely comfortable dealing with very senior people on sensitive and complex issues.Prior to my CNN career, I worked for Sky News and the BBC. I have been a news and sports reporter, producer, anchor and manager in television and radio.
