I have been a nurse, a patient & a Carer. I lost my mother to Alzheimer's disease & in 2006 I lost my beloved wife Teresa to Motor Neurone Disease. I got involved with the national charity (MND Association) to use that dreadful experience to support people living with MND & help raise awareness of this terrible disease. I was instrumental in setting up, running & developing groups across the w. midlands as well as raising funds and awareness locally, nationally & internationally. Now Chair, Birmingham & Solihull Group of MND Association. From this grew an interest in research. 2008 I joined DeNDRoN (Dementia & Neurodegenerative Diseases Research organisations Network) and have since been a PPI [Patient & Public Involvement] Representative with the NHS NIHR [National Institute for Health Research] at UCL London bringing the lay perspective to Clinical Studies Groups, Clinical Research Network [CRN] & wider research community. I've been part of clinical trials at SiTRaN, Sheffield University & the development of the national dementia research database, "Jdr" [Join dementia research]. While the tragedy of MND grew my interest in Neurology and palliative care I have since learned how different diseases can share similar issues & concerns for patients, families, friends & carers. I therefore stood for election as a Public Governor as I could see that my background was indeed very relevant to so many aspects of community healthcare & carer support.
