I began working as an architectural project manager in the WalMart expansion program, but I was quickly moved into Sam’s Club remodel program. My job duties at this position included leading scope trips to document existing on-site conditions, gather and document code information required for construction in jurisdiction, coordinate with the different.

I did work-study at the School of Architecture’s media center while attending the university studying architecture. I helped convert the aging 35 mm slides into digital format and also created a searchable database for the professors to use. We would also take stand shots from new books for reference slides. A two man crew would construct custom 18-wheeler trailers with hydraulic tails that would allow construction rental equipment to drive on to allow delivery to job sites. These trailer required tremendous amounts of prefabbed parts that each crew would have to pre-assemble. The crew would also have to install the wiring, hydraulic and ABS air brake harnesses.

I acquired a position as fitter welder in a fab shop prefabricating structural columns, wind girts and bridging. We would occasionally get a cell tower project to prefabricate, which is essentially a single bay space truss on end. I gained experience in reading structural post and lintel type construction prints.

I worked as a welder’s helper for a paper mill shutdown in Ashdown, Ar and moved on with the same crew as a welder in Luke, MD at another paper mill shutdown. These were the largest on-site projects I had done to date and I learned more of how the different disciplines had to work with each other in a time managed situations. Both projects were completed.
