Key Responsibilities• Managing, supervising and leading the project geotechnical team (4 people)• Benaim’s client representative for technical meetings and workshops to resolve technical issues with the Client, Engineer and approving body.• Design package delivery including accountability for satisfying queries from external approving bodies and checking Engineers• Site inspections, rapid response to site queries, and design alterations as construction work progressed.Key Achievements• Lead the design and development of an innovative pressure relief system to avoid flotation of the live Mass Transit Railway (MTR) tunnels as a result of removal of the overburden, This involved the modelling of the tunnel, design of pressure relief wells, and verification of solution through testing on site. This allowed the construction of the new MTR tunnel to be undertaken within a stringent timeframe and negating the need for any disruption to train services or affecting the surrounding infrastructure.• Completed the successful modelling of 50m deep excavation through Fill, Saprolite and Granite, and movement/settlement of surrounding structures including two MTR lines being used as retaining structures around the excavation. This provided an accurate basis for all future design on the project.• Diaphragm wall design and modelling, including the reduction of installation movements from the Engineer’s construction approach through combining guide walls and localised dewatering.• Completed the successful design of a cofferdam which reused the existing in situ 30 year old sheet piles and hand dug caissons, avoiding the requirement for driving of new piles in a congested site in close proximity to the vibration sensitive MTR line. This allowed the cofferdam construction to proceed during normal day shifts without disruption to MTR services.
