I had nearly 17 years' experience as a technical writer and editor with Infor, a global enterprise software company, specialising in industry-focused cloud solutions. Since then, I have worked, freelance, on a variety of projects. These include a one-year contract with a leading heavy industry company, and editorial work for a drug and alcohol rehabilitation organisation. I love working as a technical writer and editor, because it plays to my strengths. I have excellent written communication and interpersonal skills. I am also an effective trainer and mentor. At university, a Philosophy lecturer complimented on my intellectual integrity. The consequence of that integrity is that I don't write until I understand. That is, I do more than simply translate information from subject matter experts into fluent English. Developers and business analysts like that I use and experiment with their software and provide feedback, in effect providing an additional level of testing. They appreciate that I ask questions, and that I ask only after I have tried to work out the answers for myself. I have had the great pleasure of working with subject matter experts and writers around the world. Even writers with a high level of fluency in English give little clues in their writing that they are not native-English speakers. That is something that I find fascinating.
