Roger Walch (*1965) is a Swiss born filmmaker, photographer and musician who has been living in Japan for 28 years. Education:Roger obtained his MA degree in Japanese Studies and Social Anthropology from the University of Zurich (Switzerland) in 1996. He studied filmmaking with Swiss director H.U. Schlumpf in Zurich and with Japanese director Katsu Kanai at the Image Forum Institute in Tokyo. Filmmaking:Roger's film "Yuwaku 2" was nominated for Best Picture at the CO2 Short-Film Festival in Osaka 2005. His documentary "Even a large River starts with a Drop of Water" won the Friendship Prize at the International Documentary Film Festival of the Aichi Expo 2005 in Japan and was broadcasted by Japanese and Swiss TV. In 2006 Roger was invited to show his art video "Teahouse of a Homeless Prince" at the Festival du The (Tea Festival) in Paris. Roger directed the 63 minute long narrative "Tengu" (starring Ted Taylor, Mimori Sento and Kan Mikami) in 2009. In 2010 the narrative "Children of Water" (51 min) followed. His 95 min documentary "KAN" (2013) on Japanese actor/folk-singer Kan Mikami and Shuji Terayama was shown at the Tama Film Festival Tokyo and had a limited theatrical release in Japan. He was the DOP for acclaimed Swiss director Richard Dindo's movie "Die Reise des Basho" (Switzerland, 2019) and worked as cameraman for Swiss director Erich Schmid (for the movie “ADOLF MUSCHG - Der Andere”, Switzerland 2022) and Thomas Lüchinger (“Sound & Silence”, Switzerland, 2022). Roger wrote and directed the underground musical "The German" (2018), featuring Kan Mikami and Opera singer Yuka Yokoi. Roger wrote, directed and produced the Road Movie "Anaïs" (Japan 2022, 96 min) with a French and Japanese cast. His newest movie "The Way of the Siren" (planned release in early 2025) is currently in post-production.TV work/Web:Roger has been operating the camera for TV channels like BBC, FR 3, FR 5, SF, TSR and MDR. He shot 36 artist portraits for the Artist-in-Residence program of the Goethe Institute in Kyoto, Japan (Villa Kamogawa) and was a commentator for Fuji TV’s show “Nippon@World”.Specialties: Fluent in Japanese, English, German and French, Directing, Camera Operating.
