My clinical practice and my research interests are focused on the management of complex spine deformities with a particular emphasis on clinical safety including less invasive and more accurate approaches as well as decreased exposure for children to ionizing radiation in the management of spinal deformities. I helped to bring the first state of the art surgical navigation system into regular use and practice at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS)(2015), and I brought in the first robotic spine platform to HSS in 2019. As part of a four-person international surgical team, I contributed to the development of the Pediatric Spinal Deformity Workflow for Robotic Spine Surgery utilizing the MAZOR X Stealth Robot (Medtronic). I have also been the Principal Investigator and clinician who has collaborated with a team of engineers both at HSS and the Technion in the development and validation of a full-body 3D topographic optical scanner that is capable of automated analysis of spinal deformity without the use of ionizing radiation. This system was developed at HSS as part of a collaborative international research effort with the Technion in Israel as well as researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital This system utilizes rapid whole body 3D scanning and machine learning to generate a suite of 2D and 3D topographic measurements. We have developed a clinical, radiographic, and 3D scan registry with over 350 patients, and we have two patents pending, multiple peer-reviewed publications and an ongoing robust multicenter research program. We have presented our work internationally at multiple venues. I have served in multiple HSS Institutional leadership positions over the last 29 years, and most recently served as Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at HSS from 2004 through August of 2023. I am taking on a new role as the Leon Root Chair in Pediatric Spine Surgery and the Director of the HSS Robotic Surgical Education Center effective September of 2023.
