About Roger Diamond

Roger is the founder of the UK based educational charity Real Action. A social entrepreneur, former Haringey youth worker, performing arts critic, freelance journalist, playwright, band leader and jazz musician, who still performs occasionally at venues with suitable well-tuned pianos. Roger set up Real Action with co-founder Katie Ivens in 1996 after helping run an initial informal Homework club on the Mozart Estate estate followed by an estate-wide Butterfly Literacy Summer Workshop Project in 1995. The charity was formally registered in 1997.About a year before the Home Work Club (circa 1994) "Real action" was what local housing estate residents told Youth & Community Leader Roger they wanted, to deal with the epic violent youth crime and anti-social problems in the area. After a long campaign lead by Roger, eventually, two friendly, security guards straight out of the army and still in their twenties, started patrolling the WCC council estate with a tall but friendly guard dog. They spoke with Mozart Estate youth with alarming anti-social tendencies - who wanted to follow them and their dog every day between the blocks and around the overhead walk ways. Their conversations helped identify poor literacy as a root cause. The setting up of Real Action soon followed. Since 1999, Real Action has run various successful Saturday Literacy Schools and for over twelve years, provided an in-schools programme in numerous state schools, as an intervention for children falling behind with reading. All their programmes have used author Irina Tyk's Butterfly course with remarkable results. Children achieve an average reading age advance of over one year in just 18 hours of Butterfly teaching! In 2019 Roger, still active in Real Action and on various local committees, started setting up The Roger Diamond Foundation. He is now also a member of the UK's Campaign for Real Education and a Queens Park Community Councillor.

Listed skills include Non Profits, Social Entrepreneurship, Personal Development, Start Ups, and 46 others.

Since early 2019 The Roger Diamond Foundation (RDF charity) has been listening to parents from challenging UK neighbourhoods. After numerous discussions with parents and parenting experts, we now design, run and promote tuition, projects and services especially designed to help parents/guardians in those communities. By supporting parents, our mission is that more children will be the best they can be, and more are less likely to do poorly at school or get involved in anti-social behaviour, street gangs or knife crime, etc.We offer general guidance, free resources, video-call lessons and online tuition to (low income) parents. Besides these services, wherever possible we give recommendations as to affordable or free high quality courses to help children have better chances for success in life.
