For the last 4 years I have had the privilege to manage a highly dynamic, diverse team of specialized engineers responsible for providing transmission calibrations to GM products under brands such as Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC. We have worked globally in order to develop robust class leading calibrations in order to exceed our customers expectations. With a base group of 7 engineers of varying back grounds and experiences, I have ensured that the team has maintained its focus on what is important, delivering a product that excites the customer. In typical Australian style we have challenged the norm, created alternative strategies and used data to communicate our decisions and learning to the global team. I have lead my team with a vision to enable all the freedom to explore alternative solutions, learn via problem solving while always having the customer center of mind.

Holden Proving Ground

Having a background in Automatic Transmission Hardware and vehicle integration, I took this opportunity to apply my knowledge to the area of transmission calibration. During this time I was responsible for the Up-Shift Calibration for multiple applications of the GM 8spd transmission, including both positive and negative torque shifts. This work required developing a shift quality calibration that was robust to not only environmental conditions, both thermal and altitude, but also shift to shift, transmission to transmission and vehicle to vehicle variation. These strategies often used Design for Six Sigma methodologies in order to understand the which calibration strategies were more robust to outside influences, noises, and could be optimized to meet the customers expectations. Development activities included both on and offsite development rides exposing the vehicles to different driving conditions in order to replicate customer driving conditions.

Lang Lang Proving Ground

Managing a small team of engineers and technical personal I was responsible to complete the verification activities for multiple GM vehicle applications that were being calibrated at Holden as part of the Global Workshare arrangements. Verification activities included Regulatory Assessment Testing which required confirmation that a faulted diagnostic meet regulatory emissions requirements, Rate Based On-board Diagnostics met minimum diagnostic test requirements, and the organisation and execution of verification test trips to ensure that initial production vehicles mimicked the development test vehicles on which the powertrain calibrations were developed.

As the Design Release Engineer I was responsible for the integration of GM sourced Automatic Transmissions into all Commodore based applications from VX2, including the Monaro, the Adventra and associated AWD applications, as well as the clean sheet design for the VE vehicle architecture. I was responsible for implemented significant hardware upgrades to the 4spd as well as introducing the 5spd and 6spd transmissions into the Holden fleet and became the Technical Expert for Holden Engineering.As part of this role I led the cross functional development and implementation team, ensuring that all aspects of the integration of the automatic transmission, and associate components, met all of the internal cross functional requirements and maintained the program timing milestones. This role included co-coordinating prototype part supply, supplier selection, specification documentation development, manufacturing support, development and durability co-ordination and testing, reporting out to senior program managers, supporting the Vehicle Assembly Plant during Pilot builds, and finally sign off documentation for Production. I also developed and maintained international relationships to the transmission engineering teams located in Detroit and in Strasbourg and was achieved via regular phone conferences, emails or bi-yearly face to face meetings. As the technical expert I also supported warranty investigations, including hardware tear-downs for root cause analysis and reporting finding back to the transmission continuous improvement teams.
