It has a 5.5 tonne gvw, and is exempt from congestion charge payment and many other costs and taxes. FedEx, UPS, Tesco, Speedy and M&S amongst many others were a growing part of its international customer base. Against a tough economic background, Modec and a few other niche EV businesses have ploughed a furrow in very hard ground. Originally responsible for establishment and development of the Modec Dealer Network in the UK, and Worldwide, I became Sales & Marketing Director for the business. My role incorporated presenting the product propositon at Director level through the international dealer network, lobbying government and interested parties for support, and managing the sales and marketing team in Coventry. I therefore developed a very strong understanding of the embryonic EV industry, the attitiude of businesses towards it, battery technology, charging infrastructures, and a network of key contacts at senior level within it.

As well as developing business in the UK, I operated across the United States and Mexico by visiting trade bodies, regulators, and government officials. I have driven the iconic Black Cab in New York City, Boston, San Francisco, and several other American cities - it gained a lot of attention! Interesting to note that LTI trialled a Taxi share solution via mobile - 'Zingo' - back in 2004 - a decade ahead of such things as the impressive Hailo App we now see today. After a few years hard slog at London Taxis, and attracted by the development of an early hybrid vehicle programme, the move to Modec came soon after its abandonment at LTI (Manganese Bronze) and at the invitation of Jamie Borwick - I was keen to accept as I shared his vison and passion for electric vehicles. Taxi fleets around the world are an ideal early adopter for EV and other innovations - you could even charge them up using wireless technology or swap batteries in and out of them!...

Amongst a number of sales and service related consultancies, the highlights were:-Completely reworking the Mercedes Benz Service 24h proposition. Challenged to reinstate the good reputation for support of commercial vehicles via dealers, Maastricht Call Centre (CAC), and customers.I scoped the contact and communication process from start to finish and deployed the use of PDA's and dedicated fully equipped support vehicles, that enabled trained and motivated staff to win back the status of the brand.For innovative amphibious sports car business - Gibbs, I helped develop the retail strategy for Gibbs Aquada. - thought up the tag 'A to B via C'. Scoped product support for roadside and waterside assistance, and prepared showroom and website proposition, liaised directly with Chairman Alan Gibbs and MD Neil Jenkins. So there we all were in early 2000 - the dawn (well breakfast time) of commercial activity on the internet. RB against the world - just as he likes it... Way ahead of its time and a great place to be, as we were all out on a commercial limb and making it up as we went. I worked with Quentin Willson amongst others there, set up the customer service bit - working with THUS in Glasgow delivering call centre support, and a great crew in the Watford HQ. Operated as 'Brand Champion' for Audi in the UK by scoping and delivering a multi faceted change management programme.Authored the brand experience 'DNA' as a defined set of standards and operating disciplines called 'Service by Design'This included customer satisfaction measurement through an innovative multi million pound comprehensive focus group programme, employee satisfaction working with Gallup, leadership development through a 'vanguard' group of dealers supported by London consultants Nichollson McBride, and a range of communication initiatives including 'Celebrating Excellence'.. Presented at various conferences including Esomar in Athens, Procter & Gamble London 1999 (worked briefly with Malcolm Gladwell-The Tipping Point)VW Group: Delivered 'Working At The Sharp End' Programme. Facilitated every member of staff at the MK HQ to visit a retailer Volkswagen NE and Audi Scotland Brand Manager (5 years)Developed with the team a number of the early solus Audi Centres and piloted several key elements of the developing brand experience. Audi 'Schottland' had a very high profile in Ingolstadt and I was very proud to work with some fine people in helping create and sustain it.
