Alarm Management is a structured approach to analyzing, rationalizing, and configuring alarms used by a control system to ensure operating personnel receive the maximum benefit from configured alarms to improve their situational awareness. Poorly performing alarm systems can flood operators with unnecessary alarms that cloud rather than clarify the situation. In a post-incident analysis of an upset the Alarm System is often a contributing factor to operations inability to avoid the resulting consequences of the incident. Well designed and configured alarm systems aid operations personnel in quickly identifying and responding to the most critical issues and take actions to minimize the impact to personnel, the environment, company assets and profitability.For the last several years I have worked in this field to help companies improve their alarm systems so operators receive the best indication of an abnormal situation that requires their attention in enough time to execute corrective actions. I have helped; • Perform alarm analysis to identify bad actors and recommend configuration changes.• Develop Alarm Philosophy documents which ensure alarm systems are configured in line with industry standards and corporate guidelines and implemented consistently across the corporation.• Facilitate the documentation of causes and corrective actions for each identified alarm and rationalize the alarm priority to ensure operations personnel are notified in a timely manner of the abnormal situation with an indication of the urgency of their response.• Identify and configure the constraints on alarm setpoints, and the boundaries that comprise the operating window within which the process operates safely and profitably.• Implement auditing and reporting to ensure the gains realized through this process are implemented properly and monitored against the Master Alarm database so they are not lost over time due to unauthorized changes.
