I have developed a number of business applications for Humberts Leisure, a commercial estate agents, includingPublic house valuation system. This was developed to replace hundreds of spreadsheets used to perform public house valuations for a major portfolio owner. My design consisted of loading a proforma spreadsheet from records stored in a database. This provided a consistent calculation methodology, reduction of errors, enhanced querying facilities and enable easier data management and reporting. The advent of the IBM PC enabled my to set up my own business database software company on an affordable platform in 1986. From an initial start with Lotus 1-2-3 and Symphony, I was shown a copy of Ansa Paradox by a salesman from Compaq, another fledgling company. My business grew rapidly with Paradox, through to its Windows version, until a need for greater flexibility and power lead a move onto Delphi and Interbase, then C#, .Net and MS SQL Server. Business solutions have ranged from a Horse Pedigree database, college course management, Hedge Fund administration, pub valuation system and a subscriber health care database on CD-ROM. Over the years I have been a member and contributor to the Paradox Users Group, Delphi Developers Group and the Developers Group and I have presented papers at conferences in the UK, San Diego and Los Angeles. I continue to enjoy the challenges in the growth of modern technology and their effective application to solving business problems.

I have worked with Laing & Buisson since 1996 developing and maintaining their complex database of health care related data. In that time I also developed the CareSearch searchable CD of health care providers and created their web site www.laingbuisson.co.uk using DotNetNuke and CATALooK technologies. I am continuing to assist the company in modifying and expanding their database to meet the expanding scope of the company and changes to legislation.

This includedFund performance, analysis and comparison system used as an effective marketing tool, developed in Delphi & Interbase.Fund of funds portfolio valuation system including complex commission payments, developed in Delphi & Interbase.Portfolio trading system ensuring trades maintained portfolio parameters, developed in Delphi & Interbase.Co-developer of total work flow system to track fund monitoring process and provide centralised storage of associated documentation for compliance and monitoring, developed using Microsoft CompositeUI Application Block (CAB) and DevExpress components in the .Net v2 framework with MS SQL Server 2000.

Development and support of multi-currency fund portfolio valuation and analysis system developed in Paradox 7. This provided extensive reporting facilities for their complex investment portfolios. Slices across the data could be made by a multitude of different parameters and levels of consolidation. Enhancements were made to the system over a period of time.

Electricity trading & reporting system. Considerable activity was triggered by the de-regulation of the electricity markets. Enhancements to an electricity contracts trading system were done in Delphi 5 COM clients & servers. Design Patterns were used to enable different regulatory regimes to be applied to a polymorphic object hierarchy. Oracle database and stored procedures were developed to handle database queries and updates. Visual Source Safe was use for source control.

Development of Y2K management software. TV programme alternatives were required to be stored in the event of Y2K problems resulting in TV programme delivery defaults. Timings, schedules, classifications and content were recorded against all scheduled programmes and alternatives stored against each scheduled slot.
