New for 2020 - having fun engaged in short assignments which need open minded expertise. I am developing reference architectures for healthcare, writing on Systems Thinking and helping charities evaluate their effectiveness.I help groups design sustainable solutions for challenging problems, specialising in Systems Thinking and integrated design. My current options now include non-exec, advisory or mentoring roles in all sectors public, private and the third sector. Who am I?I deliver technology led change for research led, information intensive organisations in the Health & Life Sciences, in Academia and Defence - especially in regulated industries. My 30 year career has exploited IT innovation at IBM, GSK, The British Library and the University of Cambridge. My research practice as Visiting Professor at Southampton University focuses on the semantic web, social media and user generated content. Key results have been delivered in patient health and a student led ‘Wikipedia’ approach for the development of corporate systems. Via my consultancy Computiv I bring this work to market for clients such as ARM, BP, BT and AZ.As a Post-Graduate educator with the Open University academic and teacher I have authored, developed and delivered courses in Systems Thinking, in Knowledge Management and a specialised MBA in Healthcare/Life Sciences. What new challenges define my work?1. Systems thinking, closing the gap to make the complex workable2. User generated content, social tech3. Agile Innovation, Regulation and Biotech, innovation in a regulated environment4. PrincipalComputiv Oct 2006 - PresentCambridge UkComputiv was founded in 2006 but much of the work has been fitted around full-time roles in other organisations. It remains an active consulting and pragmatic research practice. Significant consultancy assignments include new IT Strategies for LifeScience Clients and IT effectiveness reviews in the public sector. The biggest single implementation was for a Japanese Pharmaceutical Firm at the core of a US-EU-Japan team commissioning the Trial Master File used to launch a next gen cardiovascular blockbuster reporting on a clinical trail of over 25000 patients. An exciting number of services have been developed across a number of key fields in partnership with sector leading groups. Key areas of Computiv practice are:->> Shared services and back office performance - with HE Associates>> Systems thinking in the public sector - with Watt Works>> Supporting distressed biotech companies - with Black Crow Ventures>> Strategic resource planning for downsizing - with Hays IT>> Improving government IT- with the Institute for Government>> Digital strategies for public opinion – for a leading Market Research Organisation>> Strategic re-skilling of IT – for a UK Pharmaceutical company>> Developing a Project management Culture – for a UK Pharmaceutical companyInvited contributions include Records Management in the Cloud, a Technologists controversial view of Information Science (a regular publication), Cost & Value in funding Public Infrastructures, Cost and Performance of Back-Office Services and a Neuroscience approach to Risk. -
Visiting Professor In Computer ScienceUniversity Of Southampton Mar 2000 - PresentAn honorary position and one which provides a great deal of personal interest and facilities to be part of a research community. It forms the perfect counterpoint to 'industry' allowing me to explore, in some depth, some of the challenges from industry and expose research thinking to the real world of industry. -
Nihr Rare Diseases Translational Research Collaboration It DirectorUniversity Of Cambridge Jan 2014 - Dec 2018Cambridge, UkMy focus was to deliver the systems for the "big information" component of big data research into Rare Diseases. Our focus is to bring forward the research possibilities of improved diagnosis and new treatments in the treatment of Rare Disease. The big data science reveals the underlying causal mechanisms from developments in the *omics [specifically the UK's 100000 genome initiative and the advances in array Metabolomics or Proteomics].The challenge is to enable and encourage the collection of detailed clinical observations [the phenotypes] and provide the extended linked data sets ready for clinical breakthrough and as a team we cracked many of the data integration issues at the heart of the UK's programme across many of the 6000 rare diseases for our own research and for the 100000 genome project. Our efforts are at the practical frontier of clinical data management linked with big data!I will miss this important and noble endeavour but especially the truly nice people dedicated to the study participants who worked above any petty personal or company politics. Human Readable: Improving the usability of clinical electronic data capture to increase the depth of useful data capture and building a secure managed infrastructure for the different big data data sets. Computer Readable: OpenClinica, Ontologies, Linked Data, Data Security, Enterprise Service Bus, HPO, Snomed, ICD, Big Data

Course Author - Mba (Life Sciences) & Post-Graduate Tutor (Systems Thinking)Open University Nov 1999 - Dec 2018I started with the OU teaching Knowledge Management (1999-2005). In 2006 I launched a new MBA programme - in Strategic Life Sciences (BS811) aimed at Post-Graduate medical education. This course inverts the normal MBA structure and delivers a content rich MBA, with in-depth study of the Life Sciences rather than the more conventional generalist MBA.In 2011-2013 I was primary author for a new taught masters postgraduate course S811 (Strategic management in life sciences and healthcare). I developed the material on the state of the pharmaceutical business, innovation, investments and a simulation game for Biotech mergers.I will miss learning from the students and supporting the andragogy of real world practitioners. -
Director Of Information SystemsUniversity Of Westminster Jul 2007 - Jul 2010The University of Westminster was seeking to improve their ranking in the league tables by a focus on research, by increasing the entry standards and by expanding their international franchise. The new VC introduced a programme of service improvement and consolidation of corporate services. Upon joining I produced a strategic review which restructured IT and gave responsibility for a combined £9m 120 person team for Systems, Business Support, Projects, HelpDesk, AV & Infrastructure. We then delivered the restructuring, managed in a heavily unionised environment without any recruitment, to produce an integrated front-line support service combining Library/IT and professional leadership for the core technology functions.Technical changes were equally dramatic we were the first UK institution to move fully onto onto Google Apps with a highly visible "we asked, you said, we did" campaign this saved £1m and was voted the #1 improvement to student life. We won a research project, TWOLER, which won the magnum award in the JISC Institutional Innovation Programme. This looked at how student contributions could add to our institutional systems "directed serendipity in Web 2.0" - terrific fun and a fantastic success. I will remember my time there for the fantastic people and their openness to new ideas. -
Head Of Digital Library InfrastructureBritish Library Jan 2007 - Jul 2007An amazing organisation - with an emporium of talents, a stunning richness of material and the professionalism of the conservation work. My role was to lead the team developing their digital library infrastructure [a system of near infinite capacity to hold digital artefacts without corruption for hundreds of years]. The wealth of eclectic knowledge in the artefacts but more so in the people at the BL is my outstanding memory. -
Director Of Business SystemsNapp Pharmaceuticals Jul 1997 - Dec 2006A break from traveling with Glaxo this role gave me the facility to live and work in Cambridge in a privately owned Pharmaceutical company. Big enough to be profitable and small enough to value their people, it was full of good people and working across R&D, Manufacturing and Sales. Whilst at Napp I was able to deliver ..>> Turnaround management of IT from regulatory condemnation to praise by the regulators for quality and recognised for their low cost of ownership (our Oracle ERP systems was bench-marked at a TCO 30% that of SAP).>> Improved customer satisfaction to over 95%.>> A Knowledge Worker environment for European R&D with Sharepoint, to accelerate new product development. >> Introduced Agile Methods in a regulated environment to improve development productivity by 200%.>> Innovation and company planning. Patent holder in medical informatics. It was a great place to develop the careers of my team which was clearly well appreciated - "pearls of wisdom, deep thoughts and experiences will be being used and shared through everyone that ever worked with him. You always remember the good bosses and the good teachers, Roger was both!" -
