I lead a strategic consulting and research program for academic libraries, scholarly publishers, learned societies, and museums. I have built a self-funded one-person research office into a self-sustaining program integrating client services, research, and community engagement. I am responsible for charting our intellectual direction, developing new services, securing revenues, managing expenses, and sharing our research and perspective through writing and public speaking. I recruit and manage a six-person team of methodological experts that provides high-quality services to library, publisher, and intermediary clients around the world.My current and ongoing areas of focus include: • Helping libraries to design and implement governance and administrative structures and processes that enable strong evidence-based decisions on strategic directions and especially on digital library services; • Providing qualitative and quantitative research at national, disciplinary, and institutional levels, to infuse strategic planning and service innovation with evidence about researcher and student practices and needs; • Addressing the linchpin issues of discovery and access, where my work helps to catalyze library, publisher, and user objectives and systems requirements based on community needs, strategic dynamics, environmental scanning, and landscape reviews; and• Supporting libraries to make smart and durable choices about acquisitions, collections, and preservation, providing frameworks to help them innovate through the print to electronic transition while supporting the immediate and longer-term needs of scholars.My title was Program Director for Libraries, Users, and Scholarly Communications from 2013-2014.

The Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) aims at defining standards and/or best practices for the new generation of library discovery services that are based on indexed search. These discovery services are primarily based upon indexes derived from journals, ebooks and other electronic information of a scholarly nature. The content comes from a range of information providers and products--commercial, open access, institutional, etc. Given the growing interest and activity in the interactions between information providers and discovery services, this group is interested in establishing a more standard set of practices for the ways that content is represented in discovery services and for the interactions between the creators of these services and the information providers whose resources they represent.

As part of the Mellon Foundation's research team reporting directly to the President, wrote JSTOR: A History (Princeton University Press, 2003), an interdisciplinary study of the development of this self-sustainable archive of academic journal literature. Provided statistical and financial analysis for The Game of Life (Princeton University Press), the first major data-driven study of varsity athletes at selective American colleges and universities. Represented the Foundation at conferences on scholarly communications and the economics of higher education.
