Rogier Oostlander is the former editor-in-chief of Bassic Groove Magazine, one of the first magazines worldwide dedicated to electronic music culture in the early nineties. In this capacity he has conducted interviews with anyone from Daft Punk, Aphex Twin and Massive Attack to Eminem, Aaliyah, Mary J. Blige, J Dilla and MF Doom. Whilst studying Arts & Culture at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam he started his musical career as a stage manager at Paard van Troje in the Hague, before getting into music journalism, DJ-ing, music curation, musical advice and copywriting fulltime.In 2004 he started the infamous and fiercely independent Funky Harlem record store in Haarlem, the Netherlands. He has written a series of music documentaries for Dutch national TV, worked as a runway sound designer for international fashion labels like Tommy Hilfiger and Diesel and released an acclaimed album on Sony Music, delving deep into the musical oasis that grows on the furtile roots of soul, jazz and funk. He has written music articles for Vice and Thump and ran the influential House Cult webmag, one of the underground’s most respected blogs of the 2010s, boasting a vast network of worldwide followers and generating hundreds of thousands of plays through Soundcloud and other platforms with its infamous podcast series. After helping multiple well-known Dutch record stores setting up both their new and used vinyl departments Oostlander joined the world renowned Rush Hour Records family in Amsterdam in 2016, writing, buying both new and used music worldwide and instigating new projects. He also joined the awarded Kollekt FM/Atmosphere team as a curator, compiling playlists for companies that understand the power of music as a key element in creating the perfect atmosphere. 2018 saw the release of the first two techno EP’s he produced with Dutch death metal legend and ambient producer Robbert Kok (Disavowed, Tangent) on the mighty Planet Rhythm imprint. Oostlander is also still highly active as a high end copywriter and musical advisor, currently working on the soundtrack of a major Dutch movie project that will hit theaters in 2024.
