Damen Shipyards is one of the biggest shipyards in the Netherlands. The company delivers approximately 150 vessels annually worldwide varying from tugboats to naval vessels. The company delivers approximately 150 vessels annually worldwide varying from tugboats to naval vessels. In March 2013 Rogier was part of a team that set up a service hub in Brisbane Australia. The main goal of the hub was to be locally present so clients would have a direct point of contact.He was responsible for the warranty of vessels sold to Australian and New Zealand customers. Establishing and maintaining a good customer relationship was an important aspect of his role. Prioritizing and planning resources was also an important aspect as there were 17 vessels in warranty with different clients. This proved to be very challenging as all customers expected action on outstanding claims now that Damen was established in Australia.Throughout the warranty period of 1 year problems of different natures occurred; from electrical to mechanical and hydraulic issues. As a project manager it was Rogier's task to establish whether the claim was justified or not and plan and action the claims. Root cause analyses were a very important aspect in accepting or denying claims. This role required troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills and occasionally working as a field service engineer. In cooperation with head office in the Netherlands Rogier also set up a management plan and a communication plan for the hub.For the management of warranty projects and claims Damen Shipyards uses IFS as an ERP system.Rogier assisted with the implementation of IFS at Damen Services Brisbane. IFS was used as a tool to improve claim registration and communication in general. Rogier wrote an internal user manual to assist colleagues in using IFS. Show less

This allowed him to use his technical and problem solving skills as well as troubleshooting skills to help his clients and colleagues. Rogier was invited to join the 2 stroke trouble shooters training program that Wärtsilä designed to better service the customers by having knowledgeable engineers on strategic places in the world. In busy times he would join the team as a field service engineer as well. He was responsible for the planning of the 2-stroke engineers.The team consisted of three mechanics, three engineers and two superintendents. Each engineer had his own area of expertise so assigning the engineers to the correct job was an important aspect. Together with the engineers he developed and set out training plans which made the team more flexible. This also enabled the engineers to grow in their professional development. Throughout his time with Wärtsilä he managed Major overhauls on smaller 4 stroke engines in the Wärtsilä portfolio like the 20, 32, and 46.Regularly working overtime and working weekends Rogier accumulated a lot of compensation allowing him travel through South East Asia for three months. As a field service engineer Rogier worked on great range of engines in the Wärtsilä portfolio. The role consisted of executing maintenance and repairs on these engines as well as troubleshooting on control systems. The jobs differed from assisting with the commissioning of a big dredging vessel to maintenance and warranty on large 2 stroke engines on big oil tankers throughout Europe to a power plant that operated engines that ran on gas.

After the fusion between P&O Nedlloyd and Maersk Sealand, the company changed it's name to Maersk line. Rogier continued sailing on container vessels and got promoted to MO3 (3rd Maritime officer). In addition to the navigational and technical tasks he gave training to the crew on safety topics and was a mentor to trainees on one of his trips.
