Centre on the Death Penalty, National Law University is conducting a Mental Health Research Project.The Centre, in collaboration with two professors of Psychiatry, Dr. Pratima Murthy, and Dr. Sanjeev Jain and an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology, Dr. Gitanjali Narayanan at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore (NIMHANS) seeks to inquire into the mental health status of prisoners sentenced to death in India. The study has an empirical as well as a descriptive component to it. Under the Project prisoners sentenced to death in India, who are at different stages of the judicial process, will be interviewed. As part of the Project, mental health professionals and researchers from the Centre will conduct interviews with prisoners sentenced to death as well as their families. At the conclusion of the Project, a report will be published with an analysis of the findings and observations. my Responsibilities will require me to be travelling to different prisons to interview prisoners sentenced to death and to different parts of the country to interview families of the prisoners. This Project seeks to build on the Death Penalty India Report (May 2016) that mapped the socio-economic profiles of India’s death row prisoners and their interaction with the criminal justice system.

In his first and Second year, Mr. Rohan was placed in the community mental health settings of Mental Health Action Trust (MHAT), Calicut, Kerala at Daya Pain and Palliative Care, Perambra. In the second year, Mr. Rohan was also placed in community mental health settings of MHAT, Calicut, Kerala at Koduvally, Pain and Palliative Care unit, Medical College, calicut and MHAT’s Centre of Psychotherapy. These placements gave him intensive training in case history taking, clinical interviewing, diagnosis, psychological assessments, Psycho-Social Interventions and psychological/psychiatric management of various childhood and adult psychiatric conditions. The posting gave him the opportunity to participate in the home visits and in coordinating rehabilitation procedures of the mentally ill and their family. It provided him an opportunity to understand the crux of community mental health.In his second semester, Mr. Rohan Parashar underwent weekly clinical supervision with a trained Psychoanalyst, Ms. Malika Verma, for his regular psychosocial intervention sessions with patients at Daya Pain and Palliative clinic, Perambra.During his two years, Mr. Rohan Parashar also underwent weekly clinical supervision with a trained Psychotherapist Ms. Rekha Bose, Ms. Divya T. Nambiar, Mr. Jawad T.P.; Psychiatrists Dr. Manoj Kumar and Dr. Afiz Ashraf, this provided him with a wider understanding of patients through different professional opinion and views.

A great learning experience under the guidance of Ms. Malika Verma MPhil(NIMHANS) consultant Clinical Psychologist & Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist.During the course of my training I had the opportunity- To attend case Supervision and discussions.- Be a part of academic discussion on Psychoanalysis.- To undergo my own personal therapy and look at the process of therapy through the eyes of a patient.-To observe therapy in process in a client based setup.
