Avaya Inc. designs, builds and maintains enterprise communications systems and solutions for the majority of the Fortune 500 companies, as well as being market leader in most of the communications market segments – across all customer sizes (small, medium and large businesses). At Avaya Labs in Australia (the Australian branch of R&D for Avaya Inc), I have successfully filled many roles, from architect , systems engineer, team lead, project manager - as a sole contributor, leading a team, and as a member of multi-location (Europe, Asia & Americas) multi-disciplinary teams.I have been involved with all stages of the software development life cycle; from idea conceptualization, future technology generation, new business creation through to the determination and implementation of critical business systems requirements. Whilst having worked with - built components for, and interfacing to - most of the portfolio of Avaya communications equipment, I have worked on a huge range of technologies and business systems - focusing primarily on the business needs in the CRM and managed services area. In the CRM domain –• Prototyping and specifying mobile monitoring systems needs [to improve contact centre manager and supervisor effectiveness];• Building the first generation IP IVR;• Creating components that simplify the extension of the contact centre platform; and• Building and certifying integrations with partner platforms - to improve the implementation speed and cut cost of deployment.[split into 2 entries - too big for linkedin]
[continuing previous Avaya entry]More recently in the services arena –• Building systems that can provide demarcation of where in a customer network a VoIP quality issue is occurring;• Providing systems that allow secure remote access for service providers and business partners;• Building models of equipment performance and integrating them with third party tools to provide better fault and performance management;• Designing new business processes to make for better and more efficient service delivery - looking beyond optimizing the "this is how we do it", to the "what do you really need to do this better";• Architecting, then implementing virtualized service platforms that allow servicing organizations to take understanding problems in the customer's domain beyond "card X has a fault, and into the realm of system wide pro-active monitoring, planning and optimization; and• Managing delivery of projects with multi-location project teams – including some team members in India. In the case of India, this was quite a challenge due to the cultural and skill level differences between India and the western world.
Bell Labs Australia researched into new communication technologies and developed products for the world market.Lead Developer, Architect and Project Manager for Contact Centre product development - delivering new, multi-year multi-release internationalized management system [Java, C++, CORBA, XML] for evolving legacy product (with geographically distributed development team). This was stretching the bounds of all the technologies involved at the time.Developed prototypes, architecture proposals and feature road-maps for next generation IP soft-switches - leading to the kick off of new projects for Bell Labs Australia.Developed wireless / mobility technology prototypes - to explore the features customers would need in future contact centres.
Open Techologies produced network management systems for SONET service provider hardware (based on the TMN CMIP standards)While the work at OT was technically quite interesting & challenging, I left because the organization was in precarious financial difficulties. Not too long after it folded.
Developing real-time test and simulation systems for the RAAF’s F/A-18 Hornet avionics computers in C and C++ - on a mix of Unix (HPUX/IRIX) and VxWorks platforms – across a range of embedded and unix hardware platforms [GNU C/C++ cross-compiled].Responsible for team delivering 20 simulation models (of real avionics) – approximately 10 man years work.
Contributed to the development of the GNU C++ compiler –• Triage for bug reports – analyzing, categorizing problems, correcting non-bug reports and feedback correct usage to users.• Providing fixes to problems with the compiler

Adacel built simulation, monitoring and training systems. As a part time software engineer (~20 hrs per week), my roles included –• Selecting tools to assign with OO analysis & design. Trained the project team & new hires in use of tools.• Designed & built tools to generated MIL-STD 2167A documentation from OO SE artifacts [latex, scripting].• Designed, coded & unit tested infrastructure components [X, Motif] for large scale computer based training system for the Royal Australia Navy [C++]• Built simulation models of proposed system design, and verified models against equipment – to confirm system architecture.• System administrator for the Unix computer network
• 10 months – 4 person student team project o Developed tools to assist in debugging AXE ISDN telephone exchanges (decoding ISDN User Part Messages) [C, C++]. o Integrated tools into Ericsson's test environment, then trained their staff on use of the tools• 7 months - Development and analysis of protocols for ATM ISDN Call Setup and connection• 5 months - Development of neural networks to speed optimal frequency allocation for cellular mobile phone call hand-off Adacel built simulation, monitoring and training systems.
