Additionally, I worked with Electrical Stimulation machines and Ultrasound machines to provide relief to areas where patients felt pain. The Namekawa Lab has worked to construct a detailed picture of the epigenetic mechanisms that govern mammalian spermatogenesis. I work as a mentee under Jasmine, a graduate student working for the lab, with a focus on extracting the most DNA from mouse kidney cells. I was given a protocol to execute, and my duties included perfecting the protocol to ensure optimal amount of DNA is distilled. I work as a mentee under Jasmine, a graduate student working for the lab, with a focus on extracting the most DNA from mouse kidney cells. I was given a protocol to execute, and my duties included perfecting the protocol to ensure optimal amount of DNA is distilled. I learned appropriate cell culture techniques, including preparing media with the correct characteristics and counting viable cells. Currently, I am studying the effects that the paternal diet has on spermatogenesis. Specifically, my work focuses on how folate (vitamin B9), a substrate required for methyl groups, in a father’s diet can affect offsprings’ health. To assess the characterization between folate-sufficient and folate-deficient mice, I use FACS to count germ cells, immunostaining to check for histology, and measurement of food consumption between both treatments. I was assigned the position of Chief Architect because of my ability to convey my points in a direct but respectful manner. I would talk to the client to learn more about who they are and the specifications they want for their prosthetic medical device, so that we could cater our design towards their liking. For my previous project, I aided in the creation of a foot insole tailored to be placed inside a shoe and provide support to those lacking proper footwear in Costa Rica. I dedicated much of my time to making sure that they not only liked the design but that it was fully functional as well. Currently, we are working on creating a fingertip for our Guatemalan client so that they can play their guitar.
