Align is a joint venture of three international infrastructure companies: Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick and Sir Robert McAlpine, formed to deliver the Central 1 (C1) package of the HS2 phase 1. C1 consists of 21.6km of high-speed rail infrastructure in a rural environment, which includes a 3.37km viaduct, 16km twin-bored tunnel and five vent shafts, with a total contract value of £1.6bn.Working with the Project Director and the Align leadership team, my responsibility is to develop and execute a communications strategy, in co-operation with the HS2 Corporate Affairs team, for what is the UK’s most significant and high profile major infrastructure project undertaken in decades.

Affinity Water employs 1,400 people supplying drinking water to over 3.6 million customers across the UK. The Affinity Water vision is to be the UK’s leading community-focused water company. Working closely with the CEO and colleagues in the executive leadership team, my role was to ensure the company achieved its vision, positioning the company as a trusted organisation with views that were respected and which influence policy-making decisions taken at a local and national level. I led a team responsible for external communications, internal communications, digital communications & social media, public affairs, community stakeholder engagement, education and CSR activities. Crisis Communications – During the infamous ‘freeze/thaw’ incident in March 2018 when numerous customers across the country lost their water supply for an extended period, I managed the communication and engagements activities for all Affinity Water customers and other key stakeholders, resulting in praise from the regulatory Ofwat, in stark contrast to many other water companies.Public Affairs/Stakeholder Engagement – With the recent increase in rhetoric relating to the potential re-nationalisation of water industry, I developed a messaging strategy that played to Affinity Water’s strengths, to earn a right to be heard and to pre-empt aspects of the arguments for nationalisation. I supplemented this with detailed tailored stakeholder engagement plans and the introduction of a mobile app as a unique way to maintain and track stakeholder engagement activities. This resulted in building positive relationships with key MPs across the political spectrum.

De La Rue is a FTSE 250 company with a market capitalisation of £800m. It is the world’s largest commercial banknote and security document printer operating in 150 countries. My responsibilities included corporate communications, PR activities as De La Rue’s global press spokesperson, internal communications addressing a global workforce of both blue collar and white collar personnel, and marketing communications to support De La Rue’s different business units. I also worked with the Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs to address the political and regulatory issues impacting on the business. I managed a team of seven and supporting agencies including Brunswick and Hill & Knowlton.

CANSO represents 65 Air Navigational Service Providers (ANSP) worldwide who are responsible for 85% of the world’s air traffic control movements. CANSO is the global voice of air traffic management. Corporate Communications - As an ambassador for the organisation I represented CANSO and its ANSP CEO members at industry events alongside more well established organisations including ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) and IATA (International Air Transport Organisation). I was responsible for raising the profile, influence and effectiveness of the organisation on the global stage. To achieve this I developed CANSO’s communications strategy that included maximising the value of the thought leadership materials produced by its technical workgroups and utilising the complete spectrum of communication tools to reach the influencers and decisions makers in the industry.

CHEP is the global leader in equipment pooling services serving many of the world's largest manufacturers and retailers. The company has more than 7,700 employees and operates in 45 countries. In 2009 CHEP EMEA sales exceeded US$ 1.5 billion, serving over 45,000 customers. Corporate Communications - I was appointed to manage CHEP’s communication activities across EMEA, both internal and external. I restructured the established communications team to handle the requirements of a complex matrix organisation, with multiple challenges across 31 different countries. By January 2007 communication plans were in place and local PR agencies had been appointed in key CHEP markets in the UK, Iberia and Germany. A similar approach was adopted for France, Benelux and Scandinavia later in 2007 and into 2008. Between Jan 2008 and Aug 2010 CHEP was reaching over 2.5 million target stakeholders each month.

Airinmar was an independent company that specialised in the management of aircraft component overhaul and repair, on behalf of its airlines customers. Airinrmar had been historically successful in providing a service to predominantly regional airlines operating smaller aircraft such as BAe 146 and Jetstream. I joined the company to strengthen the senior management team and to expand their customer base to include ‘Tier 1’ national carriers operating Boeing and Airbus aircraft and to change the perception in the market of the business.

This included building a team across Europe to address internal and external communications, client relationship planning, strategic selling, knowledge management and research.

SITA is the World’s largest independent telecommunications organisation dedicated to the airline industry with representation in over 184 countries and territories.I was responsible for the development and implementation of the sales and marketing strategy for SITA’s Flight Operations Services, initially in EMEA and subsequently on a global basis. I co-ordinated the activities of the regional sales managers, maintaining all planning and control information systems and had regular interaction with board level executives within the industry in order to promote the SITA services.
