In September 2021, Roland chose an early retirement from IBM and is now open for new challenges.At IBM, Roland was the architect and technical leader for IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator on IBM Z (IDAA). He led a high-performance team to create a business analytics solution fitting the requirements of large corporate customers while at the same time driving the strategic agenda for IBM Z in the area of "Hybrid Transaction and Analytics Processing (HTAP)".Before that, Roland was the technical leader of IBM's Systems Optimization Competency Center in Böblingen, Germany with IBM Z as his major focus area.Roland gained his experience in mainframe technology in various roles in IBM Systems through many years, e.g., responsible for hypervisor integration and management for zBX-integrated systems or encryption and security for Linux on System z.Before joining System z, Roland was the lead architect for Linux on Cell/B.E. in the Linux Technology Center. A highly visible result was the Linux availability on the Playstation 3 on the first day of its market launch.Roland also has a background in IBM Software Group and IBM Research: He started out his IBM career as a Research Staff Member working on Natural Language systems and Artificial Intelligence. After an assignment to Silicon Valley lab, he became lead architect for Text Search & Mining in Information Management development for many years.Roland received his diploma with distinction in Computer Science (Diplom-Informatiker) with a specialization in Computational Linguistics from the University in Stuttgart in 1988.Specialities: Roland is a strong systems thinker who loves to work on complex system integration challenges, always striving for simplification and consumability of the resulting solutions. He never views technical problems in isolation, but instead takes an end-to-end system view. He gathers, motivates and drives high-performance teams to deliver on customer needs, even in very challenging contexts.He has published extensively and holds a significant number of patents. He also has a substantial track record as a speaker at important conferences, as a university lecturer and advisor for numerous thesis projects.
