About Roland Smith

Roland is a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholar at the University of East Anglia as part of the Critical Decade programme. His research focuses on the understanding this impact of climate change on patterns of migration and population displacement.For GFA consulting, Roland is developing data modelling of human mobility due to slow-onset events in the IGAD Region Horn of Africa. Project focuses on pastoral communities response to climate change and variability and aims to enhance seasonal forecasting so to assist local agency preparedness in advance of shifts in population mobility.Roland holds an MSc Climate Change, Development and Policy from University of Sussex / Institute of Development Studies (2020), for which he was awarded a distinction. Following his degree, he worked with Fraser Risk Consulting undertaking a review of Pacific Small Island Developing States climate change data and projections. Roland has two decades of experience working in the arts and cultural sector, most notably as Founder and co-Artistic Director of Theatre Deli, a leading arts charity that pioneered new approaches to embedding support for arts and culture – particularly emerging artists and theatre-makers – in commercial business. Roland was also a writer, theatre director, script editor, and cultural festival curator, and was Visiting Lecturer at the National Centre for Circus Arts and Rose Bruford College of Theatre Performance.
