He has a presence in both the global South and North through the private, public, academic and civil society sectors around planning.Australian Planners Declare that he co-founded with Brighid Sammon is a young organisation that is a response to the mega-sized climate-induced bushfires that took place at the beginning of 2020 across Australia. They have established themselves Australia wide with over 50 members where they will launch their first pilot projects to bring change and leadership in the planning industry. Roland is also the Lead for Advocacy and Projects for Young Urbanists in South Africa. In cooperation with the Board of YU, Roland has been responsible to help rebrand and restructure the organisation and putting together high portfolio talks and meetings to help foster change for urbanists in the Southern African country that is his birthplace. Also part of Roland's work is to write in-depth briefings for a local government audience across Australia to support better practices and understanding of the role of planning. Writing for the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) allows Roland to connect to a range of stakeholders on issues close to his heart like environmental, participatory and transportation planning. Roland has previously undertaken an internship at RMIT where he worked with Professor Libby Porter as a Research Assistant looking at the sale of public land in Victoria with links with housing inequality and the provision of public housing. The research was published in The Conversation, The Age.Roland then completed his First Class Honours in Urban and Regional Planning where he undertook the thesis stream looking at how young planners transition from planning education into practice. The city is the most congested in South Africa, with both travel times and carbon emissions growing fast. The city’s own Transport Directorate has found that this costs the city R2.8 billion a year and lower-income residents up to 45% of their monthly household expenditure. Show less -
