Profile bio

About Rolf Breuer

My journey began as a Field Engineer for digital process control systems in Germany. Working for Measurex, headquartered in Cupertino, CA, I project-managed the installation of about 10+ of these multi-million dollar control systems on a variety of paper machines always being on time and satisfying the system's guaranteed ROI of 9 to 12 months. With being successful in this position and a follow-on as applications engineer, I crossed over to sales and was instrumental in the introduction of a new control system in Europe. In 1986 I transferred to company headquarters in Cupertino, CA. My experiences in marketing, technical training and documentation, product management, engineering and quality assurance supported the start of a Business Management consulting career in 1993 with track records in ISO 9000, product development, and network security projects. The challenges in positions as a Director of Quality at a PC peripheral start-up and a Director of Operations at a VoIP start-up complimented my experience. I could not resist jumping into a of couple of start-ups of my own and gaining valuable experiences. I'm always interested in new, emerging technologies and how they will be employed to make our life and work easier and more productive. That’s how Cornami found me. Specialties: Systems Engineering, Project Management, Hardware and Software Development, Process Analysis and Process Improvement. Database design & development (from BOM to WIP, from Parts to People) was many times a project and sometimes a tool. Troubleshooting is part of all of the above and became another talent. Designing ways and means to get things done faster and better, working with people, let to great ideas and kept passion and fun compete with each other.

Listed skills include Product Management, Start Ups, Integration, Program Management, and 19 others.

Oct 2004 - Nov 2006

Co-Founder

Connection Labs

Cupertino, Ca

Defining product strategy and developing business relationships. The company developed peripherals for PCs in the field of access management and data storage. In late 2004 we conceptualized a unique - and revolutionary - data storage system for consumer PCs that makes adding storage transparent: Why not adding disk storage to a PC just like RAM? Add enhanced data protection as well. Our "roadmap to ultimate storage success" had 2 steps: (1) We started to create interest in early 2005 with an external USB HDD hub that could hold 4 hard drives. Starting with one drive in the hub it remained a 1-volume entity on the PC when additional HDDs where added. Only its disk capacity grew. Hot-swap of drives allowed the replacement of old and smaller drives (the "fullness" of the hub was shown with a LED bargraph) with new and bigger drives as they would become available. It was all the "enterprise luxury" for the "rest of us" at home.(2) Step 2: integrate this technology into the motherboards of PCs and Macs. Update: (1) In October the co-founder started to implement the concept into a new disk controller line at Silicon Image. All Tivo's use the chip now. (2) A company called Data Robotics introduced their USB/Firewire storage array hub in June of 2007: an external USB HDD hub that one could fill with hard drives. Looked like we had the right products. They are both a success. And yes, there is a human "bridge" from ConnectionLabs to the "Drobo"...

Founder

Gadgetcentral

Cupertino, California

A group of excited gadgeteers founded GadgetCentral as an e-Commerce startup in 1999. The "field" changed when the "bubble" blew in 2000. Back to our day jobs. The gadgeteering time did not really end. I pushed the site through a re-start in mid 2009 and who knows ... Engadget, Gizmodo watch out. ;-) (Currently sitting in the Gadget Garage waiting for somebody with more time...)

Jan 1999 - Mar 2005

Director Of Operations

Global Internet Communications

A company that - in 2000 - was poised to become a technology leader in the VoIP field. The Gatekeeper development in conjunction with voice, fax, and messaging media servers allowing calls between VoIP phones and to and from standard PSTN phones was a first in the industry and did work through enterprise and residential firewalls. Taking our IP phone overseas, plugging it into a DSL connection and dialing home to the U.S. with a seven-digit number was like magic.I was responsible for a) the large telephony system including configuration, on-going administration and up-time, and b) the installation and up-time of the company's main system servers at a co-located datacenter.
