Providing fractional business development and consulting support to startups working in the synthetic biology and climate biotech spaces. Clients have included Google X, Tierra Biosciences, Fafa Biotic, and most recently Synonym Bio and VERDE Nanomaterials, among others. From 2019-2023, I started as the first member of DMC Biotechnologies focused on business development, which grew into a team of 5+, resulting in multiple partnerships and offtake agreements for new bio-based chemicals. From 2017-2019 I ran a research program at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as a Director's Fellow, where I explored the use of cell-free systems as a metabolic engineering toolset and biochemical production platform. In 2016 I worked as a Fellow with the US Dept. of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E), identifying novel energy directions with the potential for large-scale impact. I helped develop program concepts in Rewiring Anaerobic Digestion and Bioharnessed Engineering. Prior to this, I earned my Ph.D. at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, where I successfully used a kinetic enzymatic model to improve hydrogen productivity by 3-fold and demonstrated high-yield hydrogen production from biomass sugars for the first time, using an in vitro enzymatic pathway. During my PhD I co-founded two startups during this time, Cell-free Bioinnovations, whose work continues through the spin-out Bonumose, and Gate Fuels, which was purchased by a strategic partner. Current focus areas: commercialization strategy, product selection and product-market fit, customer engagement & relationship management, pitch deck development, government relations, TEA, LCA, financial analysis and decision-making, and BD systems development.

Director Of Business DevelopmentDmc Biotechnologies, Inc. Oct 2019 - Oct 2023Durham, North Carolina, UsSpearheaded customer engagement efforts to guide DMC lead product development, resulting in LOIs from 2 major customers representing >$40M in annual revenue, validating DMC’s value propositions for this product. Built detailed business cases for a wide range of DMC products, including multiple amino acids, polyols, organic acids, and terpenoids – including market intelligence and analysis, competitor analysis, sales forecasting and financial modeling, and co-managed DMC’s innovation pipeline, assessing the business potential for >100 candidate molecules. Ran US- and Europe-focused search of contract manufacturing facilities in support of piloting and contract manufacturing, for both food and pharma grade production. Also led life cycle analysis (LCA) efforts for three product families to support investor and customer missions. -
Director'S FellowNational Renewable Energy Laboratory Jan 2017 - Jul 2019Golden, Co, UsApplied cell-free tools for microbial metabolic pathway engineering relevant to lignin utilization. Other focus areas included cell-free polymer precursor biosynthesis, a cell-free electrons-to-molecules approach, and an Energy I-Corps/customer discovery-driven assessment of products that could leverage NREL technology. -
FellowArpa-E Feb 2016 - Jan 2017Washington, Dc, UsIdentified high-risk, high-reward energy technologies with transformative potential, through technical and economic analyses. Assisted in funding opportunity development and active program management. -
CeoGate Fuels Inc. And Cell-Free Bioinnovations Inc. Aug 2010 - Mar 2015Co-founded Gate Fuels Inc. in 2010, in order to further develop Bacillus platform for the conversion of cellulosic biomass to a variety of value-added chemicals, with the end goal of licensing technology to industrial partners. Co-founded Cell-Free Bioinnovations in 2012 to further develop a cell-free platform for value-added chemical production. Both companies were recipients of multiple NSF and DOE SBIR and STTR grants, resulting in >$2M in non-dilutive funding. This role included commercialization planning broadly, including market and competitor analysis, customer discovery, negotiation of an IP license from Virginia Tech, and development of a series of joint development plan, resulting in the acquisition of Gate Fuels by Arbiom, a biorenewable chemicals producer.Initiated relationships with strategic allies, including EnzymeWorks, OptaFuel, Max Power, Biométhodes, and Arbiom, resulting in $90,000 in seed funding.Cell-Free Bioinnovations spun off commercialization of cell-free rare sugar production in 2016; this effort continues as Bonumose Inc. today.

Ndseg Fellow & Ph.D. CandidateVirginia Tech Aug 2008 - Dec 2013Blacksburg, Va, UsAs a graduate student I demonstrated high-yield production of hydrogen from biomass for the first time, through the use of an in vitro pathway of purified enzymes. My first study, which focused on the factors affecting biomass saccharification, compared cellulose solvent-based and ammonia-based pretreatments to show that high lignin removal is insufficient for rapid hydrolysis; the cellulose surface accessible to the enzyme is more important, especially when low enzyme loadings are used (3 FPU/g glucan). Later projects included developing a novel hydrogen production and detection apparatus; high-yield hydrogen from glucose, sucrose, xylose, and biomass sugars for the first time; and a 3-fold increase in reaction rate through kinetic modeling of the in vitro enzymatic pathway. -
Biological Science Lab TechnicianUsda-Ars Jun 2008 - Aug 2008Washington, Dc, UsWorked for the Crop Conversion Science and Engineering Research Unit. Performed experiements with barley hull: pretreated using Soaking in Aqueous Ammonia (SAA), digested to simple sugars with enzymes, and fermented to fuel and other value-added products. -
Engineer OfficerUs Army May 2003 - May 2007Arlington, Virginia, UsServed with the 54th Engineer Battalion (Combat, Mechanized) in Bamberg, Germany and Ramadi, Iraq. As a Platoon Leader, found and destroyed 25 roadside bombs while conducting route clearance missions in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. As Company Executive Officer, supervised company maintenance program, which helped improve route clearance equipment operational readiness from 50% to 90% over a two-month period. Commanded the company for 35 days of combat operations in the commander's absence. Also served in various Staff Officer positions at the battalion / task force level. -
