The HeartMath Institute is a nonprofit research and educational organization where I have been Research Director for over 30 years. The path that led me to heart rate variability research and the development of HRV biofeedback technologies began in 1987 when I first met Doc Childe. Doc, through his studies and experiences had concluded that the energetic heart is the bridge to one’s higher awareness capacities. I was aware of references to the heart as a source of inner guidance, wisdom and unconditional love, but considered them to be metaphors and never took them seriously. I decided to sincerely try the heart-focused practices Doc suggested to access my heart’s intuitive guidance. I was surprised and delighted with the positive effects it had on my self-awareness, meditations, personal and business decisions, relationships and my ability to regulate my thoughts and emotions. These experiences and intuitive promptings from my heart led me to help Doc and others found the HeartMath Institute to explore how the qualities associated with heart could improve healthy function, social harmony and help people better navigate an increasingly stressful and polarized world.In 1991 we started HeartMath Institutes’ applied research lab. We focused on studying the physiology of emotion, heart-brain communication, the heart’s magnetic field, energetic communication and intuition. We discovered an optimal physiological state that we call heart coherence and developed a system of techniques and coherence feedback technologies to help people learn how to shift into and sustain a heart coherent state. There are over 500 independent studies that have used the coherence techniques and technologies and thousands of HeartMath certified individual and organizational trainers, mentors, coaches, healthcare professionals, educators and trauma specialists who are sharing this transformational work around the world. In 2008 we launched the Global Coherence Initiative (GCI), a science-based, international effort that conducts exciting research on interactions and interconnectivity between human consciousness and the Earth’s magnetic and energetic field environment with the intention of promoting peace and harmony. This is measured by our other initiatives including the Global Coherence Monitoring System, Global Tree Potential Monitoring System, Global Coherence app and citizen science projects.
