Profile bio

About Roman Czebiniak

I have spent twenty years helping international, national, and local organizations achieve their objectives by developing innovative strategies, managing strong teams, and building broad coalitions around a common vision. Having held senior executive, management, and legal roles, and worked for governments, companies, and nonprofits, I have increasingly enjoyed advising global business, philanthropic, and government leaders seeking creative solutions that promote conservation and social well-being alongside profitability. This led me to startup a non-profit in San Francisco and a private consulting firm in Jakarta, focusing on climate change, forest conservation, energy, ocean, and supply chain issues. Over time, work focused on solving seemingly intractable problems has led to more expansive projects helping companies and foundations mitigate and manage public, legal, and financial risks. From research and writing in legal offices, think tanks, and academic institutions, to testifying before Congress, presenting at United Nations’ conventions, and working with grassroots organizations in the field, I am less interested in specific tactical maneuvers rather than working with those with the courage to attempt great change. Notable accomplishments include: negotiating historic land use and climate change legislation in California with a broad coalition of private, public, and NGO partners; leading the efforts of 30 country offices to help secure the first international climate change agreement to protect tropical forests; incubating strategies and movements critical to the establishment of a national forest moratorium in Indonesia and a coal moratorium on public lands in the U.S.; developing strategic plans and assessments for philanthropies interested in creating transformative change on energy and forests in Indonesia; and developing an industry-leading social and sustainability policy on palm oil.
