Software Engineer
I was a leading contributor to many projects within our Vertical and Horizontal scaling initiatives. The Databases Team was responsible for maintaining and scaling our primary metadata store (PostgreSQL running on RDS), but also worked closely with product and other infrastructure teams to help scale their systems, and to ensure our sharding efforts could complete as expected. The Vertical Sharding initiative was focussed on breaking out expensive tables from our primary database instance into separate instances, enabling a longer runway for the team to build more sustainable infrastructure. I was a leading contributor on our Vertical Shard Cutover Tooling + Procedure, which the team used to shard our primary database instance into 6 instances. I collaborated with the team to define a cutover procedure, and was one of the leading contributors on the tooling we used to prepare, cut over, and potentially rollback sharding operations. The tooling we built allowed us to cutover traffic to standby instances without taking site-wide downtime, and in less than 15 seconds! I also built tooling to help with incident recovery for adjacent systems, and lead documenting Vertical Sharding, capturing context around logically sharding the application layer, working with product teams, infrastructure deployments, cutover, and clean up. The Horizontal Sharding initiative is focussed on building a more sustainable and scalable metadata platform. I built a low-latency database topology propagation library that clients at Figma could use to subscribe to topology changes, a necessary piece of infrastructure needed to express the richer database topologies we'd use with Horizontal Sharding. I also upgraded our in-house database proxy layer to use the new database topology system without incurring any downtime. As always, team cohesion and wellness was a major focus for me! I lead our reading group + weekly team hangs, and mentored + hired an intern who joined the DB team!
Core Applications Server-Side Engineer
I worked with the client-side and product development teams to scope features, I devised implementation strategies, and I shipped feature & updates to server behavior.
Data & Ads Infrastructure Engineer
I became one of the primary stewards of Flipboard’s data infrastructure while on the data team, which leverages big data tech for business insight, features, and user data processing.
Software Engineer Intern
Summer was focussed on a few back-end projects. I implemented a general purpose mechanism that allows Flipboard to estimate the similarity between any two documents in a fast manner, and rolled-out a new type of targeted notification, directed toward Flipboard's magazine curators.
Platform Intern
My summer was spent working with media files, transcoding operations, and researching the feasibility of server-side media processing.
