My name is Romel Luistro. Owner and Head Coach at Luistro Combat Academy.Born and raised in England, I started training and competing in kickboxing when I was 9. This continued until I was 13 years old, at which point I transitioned to learning Japanese Jiu Jitsu. At the age of 17 I moved onto Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Carlson Gracie in London. I started coaching in England early 2006 before moving to Australia in October 2006 at the age of 23. UFC athlete Brian Ebersole held his first professional fight team tryouts in Perth in 2008, and I've always been proud of the fact that I was the first and only person to make it through the gruelling tryouts. Through hard work and perseverance I was fortunate enough to realise my dream of becoming a professional athlete. I went on to compete overseas in England, New Zealand and America and continued coaching as Brian's Assistant Coach.When Brian left for America on his own fight career path, I took over as head coach at FFC and since then has been Head Coach at many gyms; after FFC I moved to Synergy for 4 years, then MMA 24/7 and then UFC Gym. I am very grateful for all my loyal students that have followed me from gym to gym over the years.Then the time came when I knew I would have to open up my own gym so that my students could have one stable place to call home. My career as a professional combat athlete taught me many life lessons which I carried over into the work/business industries I have been involved with; Hard work and smart work, there are no shortcuts!Luistro Combat Academy was born! I know that Luistro Combat Academy (LCA) is not the biggest in size (yet!), but I make sure we utilise every inch of the mat space. I am very picky about the members that I accept into the gym, as safety has the highest importance. Combat sports is already dangerous and I want to make sure that all my students have the right kind of training partners and environment so that they decrease the risk of injury when they are training. LCA has a mix of professional athletes who train full-time as well as lawyers, doctors and FIFO workers who travel from as far south as Mandurah and far north as Quinns Rock to train at our gym. I accept all levels of students as long as they are there to learn and are respectful. I am a lifelong martial artist and all about maintaining longevity in the sport.
