New York Life is a brand synonymous for keeping its promise. For over 100 years the company has not missed a dividend payment to policyholders. The company is proud to be there for its clients when they need it most. A specific experience that I had at New York Life is one that involved a claim for a cancelled policy. A long time insured passed away as a result of a stroke; after passing, the insureds wife contacted the agent to file a claim. When the agent filed the claim it was declined because the insured cancelled all of the couple's New York Life policies six months prior to his passing. This struck the agent as a surprise because the couple was a long term client; so he conducted his own investigation into the cancellation. At the end of his inquiries, he discovered that the insured husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease prior to the cancellation. It turns out that the husband had dementia and cancelled the policies. The agent requested to reverse the cancellation as a result of his research and New York Life paid the claim which allowed the widow to grieve without worry that her estate would be reduced with her husband's passing.I learned a lot about how important insurance is as a financial tool for families and businesses alike.I was able to develop business within my own network as well as developing additional networks which continue to be a part of my circle even after leaving the company.At the time I was with New York Life the ability to bring a guarantee to families was incredibly gratifying.

The Economic Development Team was charged with creating ways that the city of Union City could attract more commerce and generate revenue for the city. The team consisted of members of the city administrators, council members and citizens. I was lucky enough to be asked to participate as a citizen member. We examined various ways that Union City would be a destination that businesses would want to consider. Location within the San Francisco Bay Area, Access to Freeways and public transportation along with proximity to Silicon Valley were among the best benefits for businesses.This venture provided a great education in how city government works and the process that happens to improve local government.

I was hired as an Account Executive in 2003 and grew new business for the most difficult and price conscious territory by 100%. In 2004 I moved to underwriting to better understand how the company evaluated new risks and maintained renewal business.By 2011 when I left my territory of 24 agents grew to $11Million in premium and included the highest producing agency for the company.I was able to work with the IT group on various projects which included leading the charge to transition the Underwriting Department to a paperless filing system.I was also the subject matter expert for financial services risk and grew to become a Senior Underwriter.

As I learned the product I was able to become an Underwriter with mentoring from seasoned Underwriters and the company's Principals.Eventually, I was able to develop several programs for broker / dealers and their representatives. I was the primary point of contact managing a program for independent life insurance agents' errors and omissions. I also brokered coverage that couldn't be underwritten by the company by developing relationships with wholesalers whom I still maintain as mentors in the industry.ProSurance opened my eyes to the possibilities of how creative insurance could be in managing business risk.
