I did my final year graduate internship at CLS (Collecte Localisation Satellites) Brest for a period of five and a half months (March to August 2015). The company is a part of the CLS Group, an affiliate of CNES (Centre National d’Études Spatiales), Ifremer (L'Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer) and ARDIAN (ex Axa Private Equity). CLS provides integrated solutions for satellite tracking and data collection, ocean observation and maritime and land radar surveillance.The internship is intended to support the 'fight against illegal fishing', which is one of the seven pilot applications of the INDESO project (Infrastructure Development of Space Oceanography). It is a collaborative effort between France and Indonesia for a period of 4 years (2013 - 2016), whose mission is to establish a sustainable fisheries in order to strengthen the blue economy in Indonesia.The main objective of the internship is to perform a joint analysis of VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) and AIS (Automatic Identification System) data with ship targets in SAR imagery (Synthetic Aperture Radar). Software applications written in Python were developed in order to perform this joint analysis automatically. The correlation coefficient between ship targets in SAR imagery and beacon data (VMS and AIS) was evaluated to characterize the detection performance of SAR. An approach was also presented to identify illegal fishing vessels in SAR imagery.
