Romy is an ecological economist with particular focus on natural resource management, agriculture and regional development and environmental conservation. She is an accomplished research scientist and consultant, project manager and team leader.     I initially worked at the Division of Wildlife and Ecology in Canberra (Gungahlin), where I was part of a team of researchers exploring regional futures, in particular options for sustainable tourism development in the Port Douglas - Daintree region. I worked on a variety of projects including the costing of cyclone impacts. My work on marine and coastal policy was brought to bear in the Australian Government's National Oceans Policy. After shifting to the Division of Tropical Agriculture in Townsville in April 1999, I focused on broad-scale sustainability challenges and was instrumental in setting up the Ord Bonaparte R&D Program in the Kimberley. In my role as principal investigator, project manager and team leader, I undertook investigations with pastoralists and graziers in northern Queensland and with sugar cane growers. I led the CSIRO submission into the influential Hildebrand inquiry into the sugar industry.I developed and implemented a tourism research stream for the Tropical Savannas CRC to investigate the challenges of remote area tourism. I looked into water quality management options in the Great Barrier Reef, which would help define the Reef Water Quality Protection Plan. I contributed scientific expert advice to various technical advisory boards, including for the Wet Tropics Management Authority and Burdekin Dry Tropics Board, and supported Regional Natural Resource Management from its very beginnings.I was also a member of the research team, lead by Paul Walker, who developed the Tourism Futures Simulator for Douglas Shire, to enable the Council and other decision makers to explore the likely social, economic and environmental implications of planning and policy decisions.
