I write literary historical novels that likely fit into the arena of thrillers. My first novel, YEAR OF THE MONKEY, published by Simon and Schuster, was well received by the critics though the marketplace had a cultural distaste for its subject, Vietnam. It's a damn good, important read on that war and is still relevant as long as we continue to engage in world affairs—"One of the best war novels of [the 20th Century]," the San Diego Union wrote. The novel is digitally available in the usual places—and at a decent, even bargain price.After a long mid-lister's dry spell, the first Ray Myers thriller came out in 2012, THE COURAGE TO KILL (Cliff Edge), in which a young woman is jailed for the murder of her father, while crime reporter Myers, seeking to prove her innocence, becomes targeted himself by a psychopathic killer. Another novel that hit the stores in early 2014, another literary historical thriller, THE SUM OF HIS WORTH (Cliff Edge), takes us to the Deep South in the 1960s. A white Alabama teen struggles to defend a Black friend and his family in a small city where the KKK is judge, jury and executioner—a story reminiscent of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and a good companion novel to it. Young Sonny Poe's survival depends on gut courage and a devoted, mysterious father-figure friend he calls Doctor Joe. With the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement, the novel is a timely reflection on today’s continued fight for Black Americans’ equal freedoms in this country.My latest novel is also a thriller, BABY LOVE (self-published by HotDamn University Press), is a convoluted blaze of a story concerning the smuggling of babies from foreign ports into the U.S. Also featuring Ray Myers, the intrepid crime reporter, who suffers indignities such as a bullet in his gut to find a group of missing babies in the hands of a ruthless crime boss in Ensenada. Can he find the babies and save them before they are sold to the highest bidder or die from a foreign disease? It's a thrilling chase and a prize-winning novel.I started out with writing on the brain as a Journalism major and graduate from the Grady School at the Univ of Georgia, then worked years on various newspapers until I was able to give up the deadlines (and often editorial disagreement) and became a student again, this time of creative writing, for an MA at SDSU and an MFA at the Univ of Arizona. Currently, after a long dry spell, I'm back at it with another Ray Myers venture into mayhem. In the meantime, like Voltaire, I get by tending my own garden.
