I am a1982 graduate of the B. Allan Mackie School of Log Building Teacher-Training Session in Prince George, B.C. and served as a guest instructor there in 1983. Earlier, I attended the University of Minnesota Liberal Arts College and served as the Maintenance & Training Petty Officer for my division on the Navy's Aircraft Carrier USS Intrepid during the Cold War, after which I guided wilderness trips for developmentally disabled adolescents and adults. In addition to founding the Great Lakes Log Building School (northern Minnesota) 1975-2018, I did residential log building and taught log construction and stonemasonry workshops for several colleges, environmental education centers, Minnesota Conservation Corps, and several American and Canadian First Nation tribes. I served on the International Log Builders Association (ILBA) board 2004-2008, variously as a director and president. I was also privileged to assist on the committee that developed "Effective Practices and Methods For Handcrafted Log Building. As the editor of "A Log Building Bibliography -1975-present," I attempt to keep readers aware of the classic works in log building and related areas, as well as abreast of recent literature. Worksite & tool safety, log building history, and log restoration are my areas of expertise. I have also authored safety and forestry articles for various periodicals, including ILBA's "Log Building News" and "Better Forests"Locally, I have served as an Isabella, MN Weather Observer for National Weather Service, Stony River Township Supervisor, Lake County Soil and Water District Supervisor, Laurentian Resource Conservation and Development Council, Industry Advisory Group (forestry & tourism) Member to the International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board of the International Joint Commission (Canada and U.S.), and Lake County Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment (variances).Although retired from building and teaching, I occasionally conduct gratuitous, informal, pre-purchase or restoration log structure assessments in the local area, offer advice on heavy and logging equipment, assess (again, informally) need for restoration on damaged or aging log structures, and provide guidance on safe, non-toxic building insulation materials and log coatings, advice which might well include a screed regarding: "The ignorance and irresponsibility of employing respirable, durable, toxic fiberglass (with styrene & formaldehyde) as insulation in a habitation, school, or workplace."I also offer a two-hour slide show on log building history, trees, techniques, & tools.
