Apart from an initial spell for a few years at a manufacturing company, where I learnt the basics of record keeping and more importantly, inter departmental politics and the art of liaison between them, my career has been spent in the distribution business, predominantly engineering spares and services. A career that has spanned forty years - principally in MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) in the Mechanical and Industrial Distribution business.The first twenty of those years in a variety of roles which have included branch management, regional stores management, product management, product training, product specialisation, engineering division management.The last twenty years have been spent working in inventory management, with both a nationwide network of one hundred plus stock locations and also a centralised national distribution centre. This period of time has seen some significant developments in the management and functionality of supply chain methodologies and state of the art inventory management software. A great time to work through watching the morphing of one best in practice to another. Also the way that software has migrated from one version to another and then to yet another.Inventory values have been dramatically reduced (notwithstanding increases in inventory ranges and locations) during the steady advances and maturing of inventory management techniques, but with substantial improvements in availability and stock distribution.My experience therefore encapsulates breakdown service, product management, gearbox supply, managing a gearbox repair workshop, inventory control and inventory management. Working within a dynamic Supply Chain environment which in turn has enabled me to accumulate a wealth of knowledge and experience in problems that face the functions of Demand Planning and Inventory Management, with involvement in Lean Initiatives, Six-sigma, 5S and a continuous improvement work ethos.
