I received a BS and MS in Materials Engineering from Drexel University in 1978, a Ph.D. in Metallurgy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983, and conducted post-doctoral research at MIT until 1984. In 1984, I joined Alcoa’s research center to work on casting and refining technologies in aluminum. In 1988, I joined Armco’s Inc.’s Technology Center in Middletown OH, which later became part of AK Steel, where I developed and implemented steelmaking and casting technologies for a diverse mix of flat rolled specialty steels, including developments in the thin slab casting of specialty steels. In 2002, I joined Nucor Steel Decatur, LLC, as chief metallurgist, where I was responsible for quality and metallurgical development at Decatur and for steelmaking and casting process support within Nucor. In 2014, I joined the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology as the F. Kenneth Iverson Chair Professor in Steelmaking Technologies and the Director of the Kent D. Peaslee Steel Manufacturing Research Center.I have published many technical papers and taught short courses in the fields of steelmaking, continuous casting and product development, was awarded the Richard J. Fruehan award in 2018 and 2019 and the Kent D. Peaslee award in 2018, AIST's LRTOC best paper award in 2017, the Jerry Silver Award for best paper in 2015, received an AIST Presidential Citation for teaching in 2013 and was selected for the AIST Benjamin F. Fairless Award and AIST Distinguished Member and Fellow status in 2012.
