I was one of 11 selected from my Politics course for the Olive Tree Initiative (OTI). OTI is an educational experience, run jointly by the universities of Glasgow and California, surrounding narratives of conflict, in particular Israel and Palestine. As part of this, I completed a year-long academic course before travelling to the region in August 2017. We met with representatives from all sides in Jordan, Israel and The West Bank to attempt to understand the nuances of the conflict. In the refugee camps, in meeting bereaved parents and in experiencing difficult border crossings, I had some very powerful experiences which I am still processing but I feel unbelievably lucky to have had this opportunity and it has given me a greater appreciation for the power of listening. As part of this experience I was selected as the President of our society, I gained great leadership skills and how to communicate with and motivate a diverse team.
