About Myself:I have practiced in the state and federal courts of Wisconsin for 20 years. Certified for homicide defense by the Wisconsin State Public Defender, I have represented defendants in nearly 70 jury criminal trials. Benavides has a distinguished rating from the respected Martindale-Hubbell review, an indication of a lawyer’s very high ethical standards and professional ability. I am on the Criminal Justice Act attorney panels for the Eastern and Western District of Wisconsin and a member of the Wisconsin Federal Defender Program Board of Directors. I co-authored “Critical Terms in Criminal Proceedings,” a Spanish and English glossary that simplifies complex legal concepts. A 1993 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School (J.D.), I am a 2011 recipient of the David C. Niblack award, presented by the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, which recognizes attorneys for outstanding defense of the indigent and who also demonstrate professionalism, competence in provision of services, and respect for clients.
