Dr. R. Colléis an internationally-recognized specialist with nearly forty years of experience in nuclear and radiochemistry, radionuclidic metrology, and the development of standards. He has published approximately 120 research papers. He has been at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) since 1974 and currently serves as a Research Chemist in the Radioactivity Group of the NIST Physical Measurement Laboratory (Ionizing Radiation Division) and as Radioactivity Standard Reference Material Coordinator. Previously, he held research positions at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the State University of New York at Albany, and at the University of Maryland. Collé received a B.Sc. Chem. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1969, a Ph.D. in Chemistry (Nuclear and Radiochemistry) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1972, and a M.S. Adm. (Administration of Science and Technology) from George Washington University in 1979.Collé received Bronze Medals from NIST in 1981 and in 2009, and in 2011 he was the 10th recipient in the previous 31 years to receive the Elsevier JARI Medal Award from the journal Applied Radiation and Isotopes (JARI) for “outstanding contributions to radiation and isotope applications and instrumentation”, and received the 2015 Distinguished Career in Science Award from the Washington Academy of Sciences in recognition of "lifetime work and major contributions in radionuclide metrology."The research of Collé principally deals with the preparation, calibration, and dissemination of standards of radionuclides that are of interest in environmental radioactivity, safeguards, industry, and nuclear medicine (for both diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides). He is well-known for his work on establishing one of the first quality assurance programs for radioactivity in the world, as well as for his seminal work on developing national and international standards for treating and reporting measurement uncertainties.
