My daughter asked me one day why I like working so much. At the time, my kids played a game called Minecraft, and I saw parallels between that world and mine. Minecraft is a computer game where you build things while trying to keep monsters from killing you.“Why do I like working so much? Two reasons,” I said to my daughter. “One is, I’m trying to create a special place to work, a place where people love coming to work every day and where they can be really successful.“The second is, I get to go to work every day and spend all day building. I get to build a company! And the way you do that is by building up customers, building up employees, and building up yourself. But you also have to deal with monsters trying to kill you – competitors, problems that happen, things like that. It’s just like Minecraft. It is incredibly fun.”My company is USA Dutch, Inc., and we do sheetmetal fabrication and CNC machining. Our customer base revolves around small and medium manufacturing companies in a wide variety of industries.At the core of USA Dutch is our Purpose: “Using our values to fabricate a better world.” Our Purpose means different things to different people, which is part of its beauty. To me it means that the metal parts we manufacture for our customers go into products that make the world a better place. Through our customers we save lives, create music, move people and products around, and more. That’s pretty awesome.I also believe that the way USA Dutch treats its employees, if it could be replicated everywhere, would make the world a better place. Which makes for a happy circle, because happy employees create happy customers.
