Director Of The Joint Staff
I was responsible for providing leadership and daily management of a military organization with over 2900 full-time and 14,000 total Soldiers, Airmen and Civilians. I directly supervised 15 directors who are responsible for the operations, logistics, personnel, resourcing, facilities, strategic planning, legal and communications of the Indiana National Guard. I worked and coordinated with civilian leaders such as the Governor, Mayor, U.S. and State Senators and Congressmen, as well as military leaders from the Pentagon, various Services and within other States on a regular basis. I provided direction and was directly involved in our State Partnership Program that partners the State of Indiana with the countries of Slovakia, Niger and Israel. I oversaw and managed a yearly budget of $525 million dollars spread across a variety of appropriations.

I was responsible for providing leadership and daily management of the 2000 full-time and 11,500 total Soldiers spread throughout the State of Indiana. I worked for the Director of the Joint Staff and assisted in supervising the Army Directors and units of the Indiana Army National Guard. Provide management and direction of the administration, coordination, planning, development, execution and supervision of all Army programs that prepare the Indiana Army National Guard for contingency operations in either a federal or state emergency. I assisted the Director in managing the $300 million dollar Army budget that included all administrative, personnel, logistical, training, travel, communication and construction funding programs.
J5, Director Of Strategic Initiatives
I was responsible for conceptualizing, developing and implementing the strategic plan for the Indiana National Guard. This strategic plan was nested with the Department of Defense, the Department of the Army, The National Guard Bureau and the Governor of the State of Indiana. Supervised the organization’s Lean Six Sigma program in order to find and streamline efficiencies throughout the organization. My overhaul of our strategic plan and personal leadership of Lean Six Sigma efforts resulted in our submission to the “Army’s Community of Excellence Program” rising from the bottom third in 2012 to a second place finish among the entire nation in 2015.
J3, Director Of Operations, Training, Readiness And Mobilization
I was responsible for readiness of the Indiana Army National Guard and the ability of its units to execute their state and national level missions. Work directly with all units and prioritize resources (budget, training time, equipment and training support) at the state level to ensure they have the resources to plan and execute their training programs and meet the readiness goals set forth by the Department of the Army and the Adjutant General. I was the longest serving Director in this position during a time of continual conflict across the globe and increased the readiness levels of all units throughout the Indiana Army National Guard. I managed an annual budget of $120 million dollars for training, military schools, travel, counterdrug operations, cyber protection, security, exercises and mobilization of units. I was part of the national level planning team that changed how the National Guard responds to State and National level emergencies and developed the “playbook” by which all states now operate.
Commander, 1St Battalion, 151St Infantry
Commanded Task Force 1-151 during combat operations while deployed to Iraq in support of OIF 08-10. Responsible for commanding Task Force 1-151 Infantry, with 850 Soldiers, by creating a vision that guides and directs the efforts of every subordinate leader and every Soldier in order to exceed the goals and objectives assigned by higher headquarters. Responsible for establishing a command climate that maintains high standards, rewards success and corrects deficiencies by restoring confidence in every Soldier's ability to meet established standards. Responsible for creating and/or executing programs of the battalion task force which in turn increases the overall mission readiness. Responsible for supervising the Battalion staff in order to accomplish all assigned tasks by higher headquarters and to support the execution of company programs that result in improved readiness.
Commander, 76Th Infantry Brigade Combat Team
Command an Infantry Brigade Combat Team of seven battalions and 4,500 soldiers. Responsible for establishing a positive command climate and instilling the Army Values in all soldiers. Responsible for training, administrative, and medical preparation for the brigade to deploy to a combat theater of operations within 60 days of mobilization and be capable of accomplishing its wartime mission. Responsible for ensuring all subordinate units are trained and ready to execute our DSCA mission in support of the Governor. Responsible for building strong family readiness groups and developing and implementing training programs to prepare soldiers and families for deployment separation. Responsible for recruiting, retention, MOSQ, and overall strength and readiness of an Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

I held various military leadership positions during this time frame. These included 3 combat deployments; once to Bosnia as a Battalion Operations Officer and twice to Iraq as a Battalion Executive Officer and an Infantry Battalion Commander. Additionally, I was a Brigade Operations Officer and Executive Officer. I was the first J7, or Joint Operations Officer in the Indiana Army National Guard, where I implemented and made operational this new staff position.
Plant Manager
I was responsible for managing the daily operations of a medium-sized commercial printing plant. I directly managed all aspects of a 25-person plant. I planned, implemented and maintained a computerized scheduling and inventory control system that dramatically improved the overall production output of the company, while streamlining purchasing and inventory control. I was responsible for the quality control of all jobs produced and worked directly with customers on the planning and execution of their projects.
